Horse objects very strongly to getting bit in mouth. Teeth were done, no real change to objections. I explored the skin around his mouth and discovered a lentil-sized hard skin 'bump' on the corner of mouth. I used a human lip moisturizer on it and worked out the lumps; it took massaging them with lip goop and gently working them over a couple of days until they'd disappeared. No longer have as much of a bitting issue - but am wondering if the 'bumps' were caused by my contact? Poor bit fit?

What sort of bit are you using and is there a join (swivel) at the corner of the mouth that could pinch?

It could be pinching or rubbing on the edge of the loose ring .. maybe you need the next size to give a bit of space.
A rubber bit ring may work if you have enough room for it, or even with the next size.

You should use a bit guard with a loose ring becuase the skin can get caught in the ring joint and nip or pinch. It sounds like that might be what happened. Acavallo do really nice gell guards that surround the section where the ring passes through the mouthpice. But you may need to go up a size to fit them. Or opt for fixed cheek like an eggbut or D ring?
