I bought a show cob last autumn who had a lovely jet black coat, and kept him fully clipped over the winter for hunting. I last clipped him after the snow approx early Jan.

However although his summer coat is coming through it is very patchy, thick and coarse and am wondering if he is the type of cob that needs to be clipped out all year, but am reluctant to do it in case I ruin his proper summer coat.

The major problem is that he is entered into his first show next week and really don't think I can present him as he is!!!

Any ideas please?

Yer i have this problem, my daughters little showing pony has patchy coat, i cliped new years eve and it was too late mid december is the latest i usually clip but due to the snow i left it later!!. Ive been putting him out naked in the sunshine thats really helped, and ive also been feeding baileys outshine, seems to be working too. Ive got royal windsor in 5 weeks so fingers crossed its sorted for then.

The patchiness has evened out a little over the last week as has been un rugged, but despite being fed blue chip, parts of his coat is so thick and wiry........

Yer this was why i went for baileys outshine instead of a balancer. Its a high oil supplement, and also condlivene aswell, although the coat is patchy on mine the quaility that is through is good. Oh and about 40 mins of grooming everyday!! Ill look like he-man soon.:)
