my boy loves to drink coke out of cans - if you hold can up and pour he opens his mouth and gulps it in LOL!! - hes only allowed it on v v special occasions in small amounts tho!!

Mae loves meat! She nicked my ham sandwich once. She eats all types of fruit and veg.

Finn had nicked OHs chicken fillet burger!

Star will want to eat or drink anything that she sees me consume. She hasn't turned anything down yet! Tends to be things like Volvic touch of fruit, jaffa cakes, flapjacks...Nothing too bad, and always in extreme moderation!

Sometimes, getting what you want isn't good for you.
For example, I'd like Johnny Depp chained in my bedroom...but that doesn't mean it should happen.

Take your medication Hadfos! I didn't mean to dangerously over excite you like that. Besides, I'm sure he would struggle just like all the others did

Norm drags me to anything sharp on the way out to the field! Thistles etc, especially when they have those fluffy 'one o clock, two o clock' things on, then he pulls a really silly face when he's eating them!

How strange, there was a thread almost identical to this last week, and some people were really laying into others (ie. horses shouldnt be fed sweets/meat/fruit etc, its not natural for them...) How nice that this thread has continued in a nice, light hearted vein!
smile.gif

My horse likes bananas, too, and is partial to the odd pear drop and chocolate digestive! My old pony loved cheese burgers, but only without ketchup!

That's disgusting. I don't think you should be feeding your horse such things...no wonder the incidence of colic is so high.
Correct nutrition is part of correct horse management...no laughing matter.

can you imagine explaining that one to the vet?

*well, i think he may have got colic from eating my ciggerete butts*

does regular doses of polos and pear drops count as correct nutrution

psml!
grin.gif

Mine eats bananas and their skins as well as oranges but he tends to just take the juice and spit out the fleshy bit!
crazy.gif

He thinks he likes chocolate but if I give him so much as a tiny bit of kit kat finger he spits it straight out so I don't bother anymore.

Oh, colic....it all makes sense now. Is that why my horses and ponies have always rolled so much, and always turn to nuzzle their stomachs? I thought it was just their way of showing appreciation
blush.gif

So you're telling me that feeding Elz a Big Mac and Fries twice a day is actually wrong ?????? *runs to take away the double choc gateaux from the manger*

Mine don't get much chance to eat anything "odd" I must admit. Although my Welsh has stolen the odd sandwhich from me at shows, he ate a ham salad one once and loves cakey things like scones with raisins etc. But Id only ever offer him things like that at shows by breaking a tiny bit off, unless he steals it! He does love drinking my juice - apple & blackcurrant being his favourite, drinks it straight from the bottle.

I wasn't "laying into people",

Gosh, you really do struggle with people having different opinions to you don't you!?

I do genuinely believe that it is foolish and reckless to give your horses "human" food.
crazy.gif
What's wrong with just giving them a carrot/apple/horse treat?
crazy.gif
Why on earth would you want to feed them ice cream/coke/burgers...
confused.gif
crazy.gif

So you think I'm a meanie for disagreeing, but I stand by the fact that I wouldn't go feeding my horses things that risk making them ill. Maybe I'm a little biased after loosing a horse of a lifetime two years ago, who was put down with his head on my lap after a few hours of totally out the blue colic...

I still miss him now.

LOL! Well no S, I wouldn't have thought so. I caught my little mischief trying to snuffle up an old soggy teabag left in the barn after the farrier had been. I had to wrestle it off her!!

Back to the topic - I have the least food-motivated horse in the universe! All he wants is affection: he will literally refuse an apple and ask for a kiss (by nuzzling your face) instead.

He will sometimes politely accept a treat if you offer one (carrot or apple - he doesn't like polos or anything sweet). He will eat it daintily, one small bite at a time, while you stand there patiently holding it for him. But if you try to offer a second treat, he asks for a cuddle instead, or tries to get you to play a game with him.

My friend kept trying to give him a carrot the other day when he was turned out, but he just bounced up and down in front of her, running away and coming back, until I explained that he wanted to play at racing her up and down the fence.

So she put the carrot away and agreed to play at racing with him: he was deliriously happy - charging up and down, snorting and bucking!

I think stallions get a bit 'starved' of both physical contact and play with other horses, so they may 'crave' cuddles and games more than anything else???
