Just found a small lump on top of dogs back leg. at first glance looks like an engorged tick, but can't be as it has hair growing on it. it is soft and pink and also looks a bit like a small spare nipple. I'm baffled.

Will call the vet tomorrow and ask if she thinks it should be looked.

skin tag...or chewing gum!

don't laugh (ok, you can laugh). Horse physio once told me about a vet friend who had a case where the owner of a golden retriever came in panicked about a huge mass behind the dog's ear. He said within days it doubled in size. Vet examined the dog and plucked off the "mass" and showed the owner it was chewing gum. Turns out the children of the family put it there to hide the gum they weren't meant to be chewing...

....or a scab! A few weeks ago I convinced myself my dog had a growth on her face so booked her in to the vets. Was busy explaining her lump and he went 'what this' and held up the scab he'd just picked off! I was mortified! He was very kind and didn't charge me for my stupidity though.

Your dog's lump sounds harmless though but it's good to get peace of mind from the vet :)

No worse then years ago when I was shaving out a standard poodles feet, and in the pads was this hard THING that I couldn't figure out what it was - said to the owner to get it checked. She went to vets - vet pulled out a pebble :0

I'm reassured now :D sometimes the first reaction is to panic though when you feel a foreign object!

How old is your dog? Sounds rather like a hystiocytoma which is a smll benign lump. They tend to occur in young dogs but can occur in older ones too (lily had one aged 7). They tend to appear suddenly start off pink then can go a bit darker and manky looking. They disappear as quickly as thy came. Lily had one on her ear tip, I had it tested because she was 7 and officially too old for a hystiocytoma, it fell off when walking round fields. Silly lily
