Odd question, but how many times do you let your dog out in a day?

I am trying to adjust to not having a garden now (or not a fenced one) where I can let the dogs have constant access - with the last two houses I lived in I had got into the habit of always leaving the back door open, so they could wander in and out as they wished.

I am reckoning on 4 times a day at the moment - first thing, then when I turn Bob out, then when I get him in, then last thing at night - for them to do what is necessary (not bringing exercise into the equation here btw)

Is that enough

They seem to be OK with it, but I am really not sure

They are fed twice a day, at around 8am and 5pm

That sounds fine, when the dogs are in the house with me they get out for a pee about once and they would be in for a max of four hours, so that works out about the same.

Didn't you think anymore about setting up something temporary, like a doggie round pen? Although four times seems fine, and factor in when they appear desperate

In the summer my door is a;ways open so they come and go as they please. However now it is getting just a little cooler and shorter days they are let out about 6 times during the course of the day. Also Jess and Skye "ask" if they need to go out.

Though I'm determined to have a garden apartment next time round (!), we currently live on the third floor.

Stella goes out:

9 am Bathroom + ten minute stroll

11 am Walker takes Stella to the park to run and play with the other dogs for 60-90 mins

4 pm I get home from work, and take Stella to pee

6 pm Either another hour at the dog park, 40-minute leash walk or run in Central Park

10 pm Last bathroom break and a walk round the block

Though it will be nice to have a doggie door + garden, I really don't think Stella has suffered without one.

One of mine needs to go out 4 times a day, but the other needs at least double that!!!!!!!

Is the dog small or old?

Stella goes out five times a day, but she has an amazing ability to hold pee for thirteen hours (she likes to sleep in on Saturday mornings, and long after we've risen, she's still in our bed, snoring her head off

I have never really thought about how often they get let out.

They come down to the yard with me first thing, then spend half an hour or so outside whilst they dry off. Then they go out at lunchtime when I get back from work but they never seem desperate to relieve themselves. Back down to the yard in the evening and Flyn usually wants to go out around 7pm (about an hour after his dinner) then I do offer for them to go out again at night but they don't usually bother, they just go straight to bed! Again, like you thats other than exercise.

We have a dog that only needs to go out twice and has been known to go till 5pm before going out. She does go out more than that normally, but given the option and being a very lazy lab unless she can come out when we go out or go riding doesnt bother

You might find it is more of a problem come Summer. You will want to have your doors open and if you don't have an emclosed area it may become a issue.

Mine go out twice in the winter for toilets, one in the morning and once after feed time, and 2 walks inbetween, if im on night shift the whiplets and my lazy rotti who will avoid going out like their life depends on it, unless it's for a walk, then she(rott) especially is out like a shot

but for a crappy wee she will just hide in the bedroom, she can keep her motions in for a long long time

If Im on nights and sleeping in the day, my rotti will literally go for 2 toilet breaks when literally shoved out of the door and she will sleep the day away with me(she works too ya know)

I think yours are getting enough bordering too much toilets breaks for adult dogs, u worrier

Phew well that seems OK then - thanks folks

Mind you like Goya says, both are old and wise enough to ask if they did want to go out, so I shall listen to Aunty Cayla and stop worrying

Mine are out on the yard when I am out, but otherwise the door to the dog yard from their bedroom is open all day (unless the wind is blowing snow or rain in)

I let them out again about 11pm or later, and their door is opened at 5am when OH gets up, yet the buggers STILL leave 'lakes and mountains' on their bedroom floor during those 5 or 6 hours when they are shut in!

None of them are over 5 years old.
