I was wondering, once we're out of isolation I hope to have Murphy IN in the day - between 12 and 6 and out at night. This is purely so he gets his 'hay' time and so it works with me going to work (which is close to my new yard)
Also I figured in the summer it might work out well for flies etc.

I know a lot of people work it the other way round - but are there any reasons why? or reasons why what i plan to do might not be good etc?

Thanks - its been so long since I had a stable!!

The last time my lad was stabled, was early this winter and he was in on a night just so it gave him a break from grazing. Didn't have a particular reason to why I stabled him at night.

In the next few weeks he will be stabled during the day if this is possible, so that his grazing intake will be less as I need weight off him lol.

I don't think it is odd at all, we always do that for a good part of the year - that way they don't lose grazing time when riding etc and they are in when you want to do anything to them. It also saves on hay and bedding!

Hi Jen. Mine have been out at night for 4 years now and they are very settled and much prefer it. They come in at 8am each day, have breakfast, hay net and a lie down. Get worked from 10am onwards and go out again anytime after 3pm. I even compete with them living out at night. It suits them and it suits me too - much less mucking out

It's ideal for the summer months, and is the pattern most of our yard follows. The horses like to flake out in their stables during the hottest part of the day, and fill up with some hay when the grass is poor.

During the winter, imho, I would think it a bit of a poor deal on the horse though! And personally I sleep a whole lot better at night in the winter knowing my horse is tucked up in her stable when it's throwing it down or blowing a gale outside.

We vary their routines in summer, if the flies are bad they go out at night, though he stallion always has to be in overnight or he keeps running the fence lines all through the night.
I reckon out at night is a good method myself.

Sounds good. In the summer if we keep them in though we use stall chains or bars so they can have a good air flow, and open the back windows. I really like them in during the day as it means if you compete then they get to chill overnight, and I hate it when my bay horse turns dun cuz of the sun!

My mare prefers it, keeps her weight down because of the fructans in the grass, stops her getting sunburnt on her pink bits and stops the flies bothering her. You'd want to speak to other people on the yard and check that there will be some other horses out at night so that he doesn't get lonely

Mine is out at night late spring to early autumn and the out during the day the rest of the year. She is out at night in the summer months so she doesn't get sun burnt or bothered by flies and out during the day through the winter so she is in during the colder nights.

Thanks guys for the replies!

There are a few horses on the yard that live out permanently so he'll have company - and dont worry in the winter he'll be doing the normal routine - I must admit I just fancied the break of having to be up at dawn!!
