Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I want one purely because I intend to go on some trails and want to gauge how long they will take so I can get back before dark :D

I have a Garmin gps watch that I use and it is excellent. The read out will tell you how fast you are going, distance covered, average speed etc. Different settings that show you different combinations. You can also set routes so you can see how your timing compares over the same route on different days. It is designed for runners/cyclists I think. If you google gps watches you will find plenty. You can also download all your data on the your computer and do loads of clever stuff with it but I have never got round to doing that.

I've got an orange rio phone - don't know if it's smart enough to do that kind of thing..but thanks anyway!

You should be able to use Sportypal on that phone as it comes in a Java version. It's a free app.

It tracks your route and when you get home you can see it overlaid on a map.
It also tells you things like top speed, distance, average speed.
