Well yesterday I responded to a local advert for a share horse. With the potential for full loan wvtb.

14.3 Haffie currently used for driving and is still green under saddle. Bombproof seen everything but can be a bit testing of new people.

I had a long chat with the owner who no longer rides sue to an accident on another horse just drives. So we agree for me to go up this morning to try him out!

After a night of me being excited as hell got to the yard caught him gave him a groom lovely and cuddly just a bit nibbly!

So we tack up and get into the school have a bit of a walk few circles ect and off we go into trot. Apart from me saying gosh how wide and hes bouncy as hell he is lovely and responsive and great voice aids!

We get to the long side of the school.........a spook and a spin a slipped saddle and me bouncing on the arena surface!

Get back on and walk around for another 5 mins.

Owner lunges him one way perfect i lunge him the oppisite way and we have a snorting fire breathing dragon! he squares up to me i send him on he broncs stops and stands square on lol looking at me is if to say are we going to go their we went!

After 5 mins he gave in and worked nicely.

so going to go up for two weeks and do lunging and long reining and cuddles ect to start to forge a bond with him. His owner is then going to get a saddle fitter out to check saddle ect.

So eventfull if nothing else!

Nice to hear that you are being sensible, and that the owner is going to get the saddler out.

Fingers x it works out for you

Aw he's gorgeous, looks like butter wouldn't melt lol.

Just a suggestion though, assuming from your post the owner lunged him only one way? and he played up with you going the other direction, might be worth checking that there isn't any physical reason to cause a reaction working on the other direction. Like you said could just be him being naughty with a new handler but it wouldn't harm anyone for the owner then yourself lunging both ways to see that it isn't something to be concerned about.

Hi thanks highland pony. He had his back done a week ago and has been in work lunging and lightly ridden by another girl and drove. I do think he was nervous of me as has only been handled by 2 people for about 4 years. Apparently he did the fire breathing dragon bit with the past owner and when he played up work was stopped. So we both think that it was a testing thing due to any other reason as when he worked perfectly sound.

He started protesting at me asking him to walk bless his cotton socks! I think we have some testing weeks ahead of us!

Bet you're going to have stiff muscles tomorrow unless your used to riding something that wide :D
Hope it goes well for you. Stay safe and enjoy.

Didnt stay on long enough to have aching leg muscles! its my neck and back where he dumped me on my head!

To give you an idea on how wide he is I am 5"9 hes 14.3!! he comes from Oxnead lines.

i have know a few Haffies, and both were beautiful, and good with me to handle and ride, but they knew who they could walk all over! one was owned by an elderly lady and would drag her to the nearest patch of grass when turning her out, but would never put a foot wrong with me, with me just holding her on a lose rope! sounds like he needs to realise you our serious and he needs to behave. although also agree with all the checks encase there is any pain. but sounds more cheeky haffie behaviour to me!

mmmm reading your post i saw positives. so he can be testing to new people. Yep you came off(and havent we all)but you got back on.yep he lunged fine for owner but at start was a fire eating dragon for you BUT went on to go fine. Testing you?yep. but hey to me positive. Spend more time with owner and him and hey with that gorgeous boy you may just be on to a winner :). hes rather nice
