My mare has been really odd the past few days. I am so worried about her I can't really sleep properly! I've called the vet and we are going to have some bloods taken, but I honestly am stumped!

In the morning she seems well enough and is itching to go out as normal, but isn't that keen on grazing in the field (will eat the haylage I've been putting down though) throughout the day. In the afternoons/evenings she is sluggish, generally unhappy and so weak she won't even hold her feet up for me to pick out! She doesn't move in the field all day so its not as if she wears herself out.

In the school the past few days she hasn't wanted to move, and when I have tried to take a contact she just baulks up on me and bucks. This is very out of character, but at the time I put it down to the fact that I was playing around with bits and noseband to find XC brakes. I thought it was merely her expressing her dislike of me changing her bit.

I took her for our XC lesson on Saturday (back in her normal bit) and she was so uninterested and lazy we pulled her up as it was dangerous. This is also very out of character as normally she really takes me into a fence and I really have to take a strong hold of her.

Plus after just a few minutes of canter warm up, she was puffing, coughing and sweating as though she had run a marathon! I should add that she is on haylage not hay, and is stabled on dust free paper bedding.

She is eating and drinking normally, and her temperature is normal. She is sound and I have only heard her have a coughing fit that once. I lunged her in the school a couple of days ago in her Pessoa and she stretched and worked well, and as normal.

I have put her on a high iron supplement to help perk her up, but do any of you have any clue as to what this might be?!

Sorry for the long post

Does that make them lethargic and lose energy? She is fit so it's weird that she seemed to exhausted after just a warm up. Perhaps the bucking in the school was down to changing the bits around, and the two things aren't linked... too many possible options!
