On Friday night D had mild colic....not quite sure why but he was curling his lips, stamping the floor and laid down - half an hour later he was back eating his haylage and cleared up his hard feed later on at night. The vet did come out and said he would be fine it was just gas and ghave him some painkiller.

Since then he has been off his hard feed though- next 2 days he ate his breakfast but wouldn't eat his tea and now he will have a few mouthfulls morning and night but not finish it.

I have called the vet and am waiting for her to call back. He seems fine in all other ways.

I'd probably want the vet to have another look. I had to have the vet out on emergency twice in a week a couple of months ago because she just wasnt "right". Glad I did because the second time got me a different diagnosis and she was much better after that.

I shall see what they say then.

He really appears no difference in himself though...hes just not eating hard feed...he is munchng through haylage as per usual.

Nothing has changed at all... he has gone from field with hardly any grass to one much the same (but that is after the colic) and to be honest its been like that for months and months.

There really has been nothing changed at all...apart from me starting riding him the last few weeks but its only walking and a bit of trot nothing strenuous and he is perky enough!

My horse is still not 100% after his colic episode a week last Thursday which I treated sucessfully with syringing danillon down him and putting him on the horse walker. He has had many bouts of spasmodic gassy colic over the four 1/2 years I've had him. There is nothing I can really put my finger on this time but I just know he is not right in himself. I suppose its the lack of foot scraping outside his stable when he wants his tea, his reluctance to eat more than a couple of mouthfuls of feed when put in (even before his treasured snackaball goes in with him), his seemingly 'take it or leave it' attitude to his haylage. But these signs are very very slight and he seems bright in himself if not quite so bolshy. If he were out with other horses I'd think maybe he was being bullied but he is on limited turnout on his own although his mate is over the fence. I have the vet coming tonight for something unrelated so i might just ask him what he thinks.

Mine had mild colic just before end of Dec. He was slightly off food, looked uncomfortable but temperature/droppings normal. Next day he seemed slightly better at first but then was trying to roll in school so called vet out - she diagnosed spasmodic colic and said he was very gassy. She gave him Buscopan and painkilling injections.

Nothing had changed in his routine other than it had gone very cold and his water was thick with ice that morning though it's his first year of being out 24/7.

He recovered okay but still didn't seem 100% but nothing obvious. I started him on Pink Powder for a week but still the same, just seemed slightly under the weather. I have now had him on Coligone for a week and have noticed bigger changes i.e a lots more farts

(when I think about it he never farted much before) and he was very chilled on hacks over the weekend. He is eating all of his feed with enthusiasm. And isn't quite as grumpy

It's early days but fingers crossed the Coligone is doing the trick. Might be worth trying? I can see a difference just by trying the liquid for a week.

I had this last year , it turned out that He was having too much hard feed and it was too much to digest , this also bought on his lami so pls be careful.

Mine lay down in the middle of his tea last week. Had half of it and then just lay down in his stable. No obvious signs of colic. Eventually he got up, had a carrot and carried on as normal. Nothing ever ever disturbs him from eating !!! But he's not right (see my earlier post in the lounge about 'sad horses'). He stood in the field on Sunday and just hung round the gate to come in and thats very unlike him too, even when the weather is rubbish he likes to be out and about.
Perhaps a drop of red cell or Coligone for a couple of weeks might help ?
Its probably just the time of year. If only they could speak !

He has been on the same amount of feed all winter and to be honest its hardly any. I will wait to see what the vet thinks.

I have just taken him for a ride and he was very spritely and his normal self and is in the field and in the stable. He eats haylage ad lib pretty much and clears it out over night.

poo and everything is normal, I may just take the suger beet pulp out tonight and see if he will eat some hi-fi and nuts.

He is still keen for his food but then only eats a bit and leaves the rest.

The vet just called.
She said she is glad he is acting normally and eating haylage etc.

She said it may just be that he is a bit inflamed after Friday night when he was gassy and that might just be putting him off eating. She also said he may have stomach ulcers or may get them if he is not eating normally. She is going to send me some GastroGuard and try him on it for a few days and if he is not right they may want to scope him and blood test him.
She asked me if he has been wormed for tapeworm, had his teeth done, etc etc and all was fine
So we shall see how he goes.

another update - just got the horses in
i did not put beet in his feed to see if that was why and he still only had a few mouthfulls of feed.

I went and got some charnwood mills economy mix which our old boy has just in a scoop and he started eating it and really wanted it.

I then got a scoop of his top line cubes and he wouldn't touch them - so think it may be them.

I have mixed some of the economy mix in his feed and he is now eating it.

So the question is why....he has been on it for quite a while (before christmas) the only thing that has changed is a couple of weeks ago i ran out of formula for feet so he hasn't had any of that in in. What can i do to make it more appealing- or what should i try instead of top line cubes?
