Anyone know how i would go about getting a off the track/ ex-harness trotter/standardbred to retrain in the uk? I already own one trotter - i am just inlove with the breed -so trainable, versatile and honest and i desperately want another but i've no idea how to go about it? any ideas? thanks :D

you and me are in the same boat! desperatly wanting to add to my herd for the driving aspect of a pacer! absolutly ador the breed! (standardbreds) and being a speed freak i love the whole idea of it all!

not wanting to race but just looks like so much fun!

You and me both, I Had an ex trotter for 14 years she was the bestest bestest horse ever and I would love to get another, the bhrc website have a few advertised from a few hundred upwards.

everybody writes them off - one I know of was a grade a showjumper before retired he is now 35 years old. My mnare even done dressage,. If you treat them right they are the most loyal horse you will ever get.

Towards the end of the summer I will be looking to buy and I would love another pacer. Would like one that has had a saddle and rider on board tho just to make my job a wee bit easier.

good luck

A lot of the horses that are raced under rules (i.e. BHRC) are ridden at home - I know of one that's a master's horse in Wales through the winter ;) I would definitely recommend buying one from either a BHRC or "flapping" home rather than anything that's been roadraced.

My OH & his Father were very much into their trotting, won several races, then his Dad went off it & retrained his trotters as show jumpers! He had a fair bit of success with them but now brings on his own young show jumpers :)

Yes you can try dragon driving but will probably find many on there have been roadraced.. .bit different to being off the track ;)

Try looking on either of these:

BHRC http://www.bhrc.org.uk/classifieds.php?AdT=H%
Welsh Trotting http://www.welsh-trotting.co.uk/standardbreds-for-sale.php?category=All

Failing that - come racing one day - fixture list is on the BHRC site and talk to some of us involved :D

Couldn't of put it better myself, or you could come racing with wbcra for the day:) If you are on facebook, have a look on harness racing uk. There is a standardbreds for sale section.

Hi there. I work for STAGBI (Standardbred and Trotting Horse Association of Great Britain and Ireland) and I'm writing an article for the next newsletter on ex-racehorses that are now being used for riding (jumping/hunting/dressage/endurance), carriage-driving and/or anything else. I'm trying to get people who own ex-racehorses to send me photos and information about what their Standardbred is up to, now that they no longer race. Hopefully, if I receive enough of a response from owners, I can make it a regular feature in the newsletter and people will be able to see where the horses that they bred have ended up.

I would be really grateful if any of you with a Standardbred could contact me, if you would like to see your horse in the newsletter. I can also answer queries on how to become a STAGBI member, and perhaps if your horse featured in the newsletter, we'd be able to uncover some of it's racing history from previous owners who read the article!

My email address is thomassa@1989hotmail.co.uk, feel free to send me photos of your horses demonstrating their versatility and talent off the racetrack and information about what they're up to now.

Thanks for your time,

Sarah

i think there is a STAGBI sale in October at Bluith Wells. I know its a way off but they would all be registered Standardbreds. Otherwise you could try some of the standie breeders.

Here's my (soon-to-be) horse Neddy!

He's an off-the-road standardbred (we think), who was going to be sold to the meat man.
He's a very mixed up horse, but he's learning :)

Good luck in your search for a standie! Like others have said, there seems to be a bunch of them on Dragon Driving.
