Over the hill and far awa
The current Appy and I were supposed to be going to a dressage party tomorrow. I had remembered the test, she had promised to try and not gallop down the long side
. Today we were going to have a nice relaxing hack, then I was going, with sis's help, to do the last minute jobs on the wagon (which we have only had about four weeks, so been driving it without the girls on to get used to it). We were just bringing the horses in when our elderly father decided to visit to play with the tractor and its bucket
This requires me to be in attendance to lift various bits of metal etc. At three o'clock we tell him we must stop as I want to get the wagon out in daylight, to go and get fuel. So Dad decides to come with us, all is well, after I have managed to finally squeeze the wagon out of its space. We were heading to the petrol station, when I said to Sis, "I think the clutch is slipping", but decided all should be well. We got the fuel and and on the way home the clutch gave up alltogether
We were on a bridge over the motorway, on a slight incline, about two miles from the HUGE hill we have to go up to go home!
One panicky phone call to the lovely chap we bought the wagon from, who has a vehicle recovery firm, later and in about half an hour we are moving again
However we are moving in a Leyland Daf Roadrunner truck, attached to a 2.5l Nissan Navaro
On the flat and uphill we were towed, with me behing the wheel of our wagon, on the downhill stretches Lovely Chap was in the wagon, going like the clappers! At one point, while being towed, we were doing 35mph in a 30 zone
Goodness only knows how fast he was going downhill. I lost the wagon at one point and spent about 10 minutes looking for it
The wagon is now in the Lovely Chaps garage and he is going to fit a clutch for us. I am now on the outside of a pizza and the fire is lit, so I am feeling much better now.
I am disappointed that we can't go and play dressage tomorrow, but so, so relieved that it happened today and not tomorrow with the Appy girl on board. If it had we would have had to use the 'proper' breakdown service, with horse recovery, that would not have been good as the first trip out for the girl in our own wagon.
I only have coffee to offer anyone who managed to read all this drive, unless you can find the Yorkie bar I left in the truck!
