Well, I did my first unaffiliated show for probably over ten years today, on a riding school horse I pay for a 'share' in. I have a co-sharer who came - it was her first show ever, and the idea was that she would do either one or two classes (depending on how it went - i.e. 2 if she didn't get round the first etc) and I'd do one... her day didn't go well, getting E at the first fence in the first class.. and slightly better, at the third in the second class...

On to my turn, and guess what... another E! However, I did get to fence 8 of 9 which I was bloody proud of... pony was just not having it, I reverted to pony club kicks and shouts to get her that far.

Bearing in mind that for both of us horsey had warmed up really well, flying at and over the practice fence, just wouldn't play in the ring. Should say as well that it was probably her first show for at least 2 years as well, so a day of firsts all round/

Oh well, I hope there will be a next time, and if so then maybe I can sort my riding out and get her round a full course! Even with the bad on paper result, it was still good fun, and I want to do more... competitive spirit has risen! So this little report is for everyone who has taken a break from riding, and comes back and does their first show - even if it goes wrong it is the best fun! And I still love the horse, even though she is a pain!

Thanks for listening to my ramble!

Thank you - it really was great, seems weird that what would be most people's worst day ever has been my best for ages. Good luck with your youngster!

am planning to go to my first show in 9yrs next week. aims for the day will be:
1) to stay on and horse keeps all 4 feet on ground (except when going over fences

)
2) get round!

so know exactly what you mean

Thanks Lisa - Michael video'd the lot, you can hear me shouting at one point... It doesn't look as bad on vid as it felt going round thank god, I thought that I'd disgraced everyone!

mavandkaz - My main aim was also to stay on, having fallen off on Friday (bad practice good play.. erm, not!). Massive good luck, you'll have a blast. It's amazing how the old ways fall into place (including the kicking and screaming..)
