Picked up a doggy sunday, travelled from wales to yorkshire!!! She is a sweety, a little cavalier. Its such a long story, apparantly was a failed show dog due to being far to shy, which she is very shy. She does dish with her front leg which could also be a reason too. Anyway on our walkies this morning, as soon as she got in blood everywhere. Rushed her to the vets at 8am! Lady told me ill have to wait for the vet but it looks worse than it is. Waited, vet arrives, has a look, tells me that he thinks shes 5/6 not 2. Shes fully registered, with alot of champs in her bloodlines (19!!) so am slightly worried, as her dad is 5!! He also said that she may dish her leg like that due to SM - and nerve damage. So right now im thinking oh dear lord. the blood out of her paw is due to the nail being so short and it hemoriged, because its being dragged on the floor. But her movement is not terrible, you can hardly notice. argh this doggy wasnt cheap, but the thing is, however silly, i do love her. Shes so underweight, and thought that was due to her having a litter of pups with her previous owner. I know typing it all down i seem so stupid, but i did believe what the old owner said as she is an accredited breeder i do believe. so, where do i stand as far as money situation? Like, if she does have SM, i have to get an mri scan, like where do i stand? I doubt she would even take the dog back. Im so silly. I never learn

Firstly I hope she is okay now re the bleeding. You say she wasn't cheap but what did you actually buy her for, if she is a failed show dog she presumably is no good for breeding either? If she is fully registered have you got her papers, cos her registration should show her date of birth. If you got her from an accredited breeder Ithink you probably have a good chance of getting at least part of the purchase price back if she misled you about the bitches age, presumably you would have to prove she has SM before you could take any action over that. Hope you manage to sort something out, it might be worth contacting the KC, they reckon their Accredited Breeder scheme is so wonderful they may just help you.

Yes apparantly, the bleeding had clotted itself by the time he saw it, shes fine now sat on the bed watching me! Maby i think she wasnt cheap as im skint!! As always. Oh yes i have all her paper work, but have been told that people can fake them so need DNA tests, how true that is I dont know. Have just contacted the lady who actually bred her, to see what she can tell me. Shame in this world, you never really no who to believe isnt it .
WIll contact the KC if breeder doesnt get back to me.Thanks x

Are you in Wales or was the dog? If the dog was from Wales that's a notorious puppy farming area so she's probably really badly bred and the breeder has off loaded her and made a profit rather than just dump them at a rescue or worse. Hope I'm wrong but it sounds dodgy and you probably wouldn't get your money back, and if you did what would she do with the dog after you left it behind

Unfortunately yes people do fake registrations certificates, but there is quite a difference between 2 and 5, so presumably you think they might have given you another bitches papers

Did you actually get her from the breeder, or from someone else? I would still think its worth a word with the KC if you suspect anything dodgy. Good luck, hope you resolve it.

Thank you, no Casie was in yorkshire OOTP.
The breeder isnt who i bought her off, the lady who i bought her off is very interested in her showing, and bought her as a puppy. So im the 3rd owner. Have contacted the breeder. But her KC papers just seem, fine. Like, spot on. And the breeder does own her dad. So ill know for sure. Think i will phone the KC . thanks guys x

Louincrew PM me the name of the person who sold her to you - or some names in her pedigree or something - if you want, I can soon tell you whether she is genuine and whether the breeder is genuine

But sadly I am PMSL about your vet saying it might be SM - oooh look, another chance for a vet to jump on the bandwagon and say that every cavalier has SM

The % of CKCS who DO have it is NOT that big, so the chances are she has something completely different! Vets just call everything SM now because it is fashionable to do so when talking about CKCS - as you may have noticed, it makes me SO mad

(not with you of course, with the vet!)

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about you and your new dogs situation.

Most of it sounds strange, but to begin with the easiest part, it also sounds a little strange to me that a short nail was dragged in the floor enough to cause the nail to bleed, but maybe it's her gait that does it. Anyway when nails bleed they rarely bleed one drop, there's a good reason for why there's Stop Bleeding products for nails that, if you keep her, you could buy and have at home, in case you have an accident when trimming/cutting their nails and also of course, if something in her gait makes it likely that it happens again.

About the rest I would advise that you first sit down and think through the facts. Did the seller tell you she was an accredited breeder and you believed her or was it that she spoke in a way that seemed knowledgeable and confidence-giving? Did she have more dogs and if so, how did they look and where, how did they live? What do you want to happen now, realistically, do you want to return her and get your money back, do you wish to get some help with the vet fee's or how do you wish things to go from here?

Write down a list about what the seller told you about your dog.
Write down a list about what the veterinarian have told you.
If your dogs breeder does contact you and give you any info, write that down in a list too.

Then do as Murphys Minder adviced and contact your Kennel Club.

Maybe it's a little bit much to hope for that your dog had an insurance that you took over, but if she did, I would phone the company and ask if they had any advise. Otherwise if you have another animal insured, I would at least give it a try and phone and hear if they could help you with advise.

If you can't get any help those ways, I suppose since you say you don't have much money a lawyer isn't possible, but since I doubt that you're the first one to sadly find out that your newly bought dog isn't healthy, you could always search on internet and see if someone have any advice. I only lurk and isn't registered on the following forum, but some of their regular users seems very knowledgeable so maybe you could try http://www.dogclub.co.uk/forum/index.php#2 .

Again, sorry to hear your new dog isn't well.
