I've been advertising Wonka for sale for just over the past month and hadn't heard a dicky bird. My YO has also passed details round via word of mouth and someone saw him and fell in love. Their children rode him and absolutely loved him - they looked like they were having so much fun together! They wanted to loan for two months before buying, which I couldn't agree to - from what was said after I think they really needed to loan a pony of Wonka's type and not buy. Had it been able to go ahead, they would have been perfect.

Someone else then came along who was interested and claimed upon seeing him that, "on his looks alone you could get £1,500." Now I know what I am asking for him and in this current climate, it is not that amount. She then professed to being interested in buying him and asked what I wanted, so I said what I was looking to achieve, although a home is more important than achieving a set price.

She then saw him being ridden. I had explained beforehand, as had a good friend who told her a little about Wonka and his quirks that he hadn't done a lot for his age, was still green in some respects, he is a forward going pony and did need further schooling which I was struggling to do.

I know I always play Wonka down and perhaps make him sound slightly more green than he is for fear that people have different interpretations of what being "green" is but actually, he is a bloody fun little pony and when the two girls tried him, they had a whale of a time and I was chuffed to see him looking after them. After I knew she had seen him being ridden, I thought I may hear from her (she is at my yard). I sent her a text the day after so I wasn't badgering her and again heard nothing.

It has later transpired that she is willing to speak to all and sundry about her views on my pony but not me. She said he was greener that she expected - what she expected I don't knwo as she had been told fully - and that she was thinking of offering me £250.

My YO then told her to think better because she knows what he is worth, even if I am asking below that, and that it is way above that sum, which would be an insult to offer me.

Is it too much to ask that there is decent communication between a potential buyer and a seller, and that they are not trying to take the p*ss?? (That applies to the second "buyer"). I am so annoyed.

Am i really asking too much when I want a decent knowledgable home for Wonka who can look after him and help him get through his quirks, and have fun with him?

I don't know about tea and cookies if you got this far, more like Vodka and Malibu!!

It does annoy me when potential buyers say to the seller how lovely the pony is, and how they would love him but... and then go off behind the sellers back, and start making comments..... especially if they are on the same yard!!
Is there NO way you could do this 2 month loan with the first buyers? Surely if they liked him that much, they would buy him after for sure?

I'll pass on the Malibu if you don't mind!!
(Sips gently at a lunchtime vodka!)

Exactly the same thing just happened to my friend. She had put her pony on loan whilst she was pregnant. After having the baby she decided to sell said pony as he was no longer suitable and person who had him on loan said he would buy pony. Cut a long story short, he then changed his mind, waiting for my friend to drop her price because in his words, pony was no good! Pony has since gone on to anoher home!

Even if this person comes up with a reasonable price I'd be tempted to tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine and sell the pony to someone else! Can you not consider it going out on loan?

So have the first lot decided not to have him at all? You were thinking of letting them trial him for two weeks at one point - is this now off the books? If they refused this then I think you're correct about them wanting a free pony for a couple of months (told you so

) as that time is perfectly reasonable for trialling (Personally I wouldn't even consider a trial).

Unfortunately it is common for people to be nice to your face when they're not interested but gossip behind your back is not on. Could you not talk to the second buyer about it but be over-the-top nice as pie, just to make her feel bad?

I'll have a naughty vimto, thanks!

Wonka is to be sold, not loaned. Given what was said by this person, they can take a running jump if they still have any thoughts about buying him.

Muffinino - they didn't want a trial etc for that amount of time, two months was the minimum they would consider. As I said, I'm sceptical about loans with a view to buy because I am a cynic and don;t trust that someone will just want to use my pony until the time is up and once they have had their fun, hand him back and leave me in the same position as before, if not worse if he has been injured in any way.

I'm not even going to give her the time of day to be honest. If she wants to speak with me, she can, but I will make the point that after having been at the yard for well over a year, and not a few weeks as she has, bitching behind my back about him and make comments about him will get back to me because I am on extremely good terms with everyone there and they won't stand for it.

What does your advert say??
£250, is she taking the p*ss??

[/ QUOTE ]

APPROX 9 year old part bred welsh, low mileage, stunning looks and beautiful movement. Schooling well, enjoys jumping, hacks out in company although still a bit green. Needs someone who can bring him on to realise his full potential. Not novice ride as forward going. 5* knowledgable home essential for Wonka, price is flexible and open to negotiation to reflect this. Will be sold with most of his wardrobe! No dealers or trade.

That was the ad I was using. I had put a post up a while ago asking for advice as to wording and after much wrangling settled on this.

Any thoughts on how to improve it?

Glad you've come around to my way of thinking

It does sound like they were looking for a pony to loan not buy as there's not many people who would reasonably expect a seller to loan a pony for two months. Just keep looking and schooling him until you find the right person.
If you do run in to this woman, be sure to smile sweetly and be overly nice, then ask her if she got you text/has spoken to anyone else about Wonka/is everything ok because I was expecting to hear from you and didn't - that way she cannot say that you were anything other than civil and it will reflect badly on her

someone came to our yard to look at a horse, then proceeded to post on here about how useless the horse was and how bad the owner was (both a load of rubbish), got caught out big style.

Sounds ok, doesn't make him sound like a monster but is honest. Would have said that earlier HHO hasn't been working for hours.

Its just bad manners really isnt it?

Before we bought our new pony, I was offered first refusal on a pony already on our yard...he was lovely, but I didn't honestly think he was worth the money she was asking and he just wasn't what I was looking for.....I didn't mess her about, told her exactly that.....and she was free to then sell him on.

It can be difficult when your on the sme yard, but I think its well out of order for her to speak to other people, the deal was supposed to be between the 2 of you.

£250 sounds way way too low, even with the 'crunch'!! I paid £1100 for a green 4yo highland with tack, and i think I got a good price for him...

She is not endearing herself to people on the yard. This episode has made people think less of her, moreso than before. It is a shame because we are a medium sized private livery yard and everyone gets on like a dream (bar the odd spats from people borrowing stuff when they shouldnt etc) and it would be a shame for it to go a bit pear shaped because of how someone chose to conduct themselves.

Why can't people just say 'Thank you but he isn't what I'm looking for'. You can give a reason without being impolite, so much is about gut feeling anyway it is down to personal judgment. If you don't like the pony, you don't like the pony, fair dos but slagging it off to people who know the owner is below the belt and if you are on the same yard - you've got to be stupid. There are horses I wouldn't touch with a barge pole doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them, they just aren't for me. Definitely taking the piss.
