Been out all day at work and went to give my mare her 2 x Danillon this evening and there are sobbing apples littered around her! God only knows how many they gave her, she had lost interest in them!

Oh god, I can't believe it, we've been so careful

How much could I have done without this

Eeek, gosh, hope she's okay, and sincerely hope you find out who did this. Do you have a sign on the gate saying she isn't to be fed stuff like that?
Umm, I think I'd check with the vet, maybe give her a bran mash or something to try to push it all through quickly?
Utter nightmare, poor girl, poor you.

It's a nightmare. So many people are ignorant of the devasting consequences.

If you have it to hand I'd suggest you feed her a probiotic - all that sugar will have caused problems with the bacteria in her cecum.

Some reckon charcoal products are helpful. I've never tried them but its a thought.

All the best

I think I would have actually murdered them if I found out who it was! As she has been so ill and in pain, I cannot believe there is anyone on your yard who is not aware of her situation. I can only echo the suggestion of everyone else to ring the vet (or the Laminitis Trust) and find out if there is anything you can do to lessen the effects.

Oh my, that is just awful, it is so hard to manage laminitis/cushings as it is. And when that is taken outside of your control that makes you feel helpless. I really hope your old girl will be ok

Thing is I'm 1/4 mile up a track, but there's a bridleway that passes nearby. Also had 2 deliveries while I was out. So almost anyone could have done it. Vet says nothing can be done as I don't know when they were left. It could have been hours ago. Oh booooga, another sleepless night looms. What worries me is there are 5 huge fully laden apple trees near the stables so she could have had flippin loads. Its the not knowing that's killing me. Sorry this is a mad incoherent rant

Fingers crossed.

Maybe put a sign up explaining just in case, as it could be a well intentioned but poor knowledge gesture which someone doesn't know how serious it could be xx

God, my pet hate! I hope your girl is OK.

I'm sick of people walking round feeding our lot just because they can get to the field. 2 people came in the field with pushchairs (through deep mud!) and fed endless carrots til one horse double barrelled the other and this sent the mums off quick sharp. Notices and explanations do no good.:(

Oh I am so sorry to hear this, people are interferring idiots. I can only imagine what you are going through, having a laminitic myself.
Touch wood and everything crossed and I wish you ALL the luck in the world that it passes without a problem. Take care...wishing you all the very best.

Ok I've calmed down a bit! She's in the school, not in a stable because she's such a stress head if she's on her own in the stable. The school has a lovely soft surface and the vet seems happy with it.

The one plus point is that she is pretty immobile so if they lobbed the apples in rather than going up to her with them there is a *chance* she wouldn't have made the effort to go and look. She's also quite a distrustful mare with new people and so may have just stood there wishing she could run away rather than filling her face (but I'm probably grasping at straws, the apples were scattered around her.

A big 'Please do not feed the horse sign' is going up tomorrow!

This happened to me when my mare had laminitis too; I found please do not feed signs didn't work and I had to word them quite strongly stating that due to health issues food or titbits couldn't be given. I managaed to catch a woman and her teenage daughter who'd turned up with a huge bag of windfall apples.
They may have no effect at all, so just see what tomorrow brings, she may well be no worse for her feast! Fingers crossed xx

A big 'Please do not feed the horse sign' is going up tomorrow!

I wonder if a sign saying 'Please do not feed my horse' would be more likely to make people stpo or will they just carry on regardless? It annoys me so badly:mad:. Perhaps you should add 'And I won't feed your children' at the bottom!

Still dont know if she is all right or not after her illegal apple fest, she was lying down when I got up at 7:30. Fed her her pills lying down, which she ate, but she hadnt eaten any hay over night. She's still lying down now.

I know its good for them to lie down, but how long is good? Not sure whether to get her up or leave her, phone the vet (again) or not.

Hi, I don't know you but your horse sounds so similar to how mine was - I log in every day to find out how she is. How upsetting that someone has fed her without asking. Try not to worry, she might be ok with it. xx

Thanks Dartmoor, she's just got up and although looks v bad, she's not substantially worse so I guess thats the best I could have hoped for. She's eating some hay now so I'm a bit happier

I know exactly how you feel as I also have a shettie who suffers with cushings, and I have now had to fence him completely away from the lane due to good doers throwing apples, carrots, pears, bread and god knows what else over the fence.
I put a huge sign up on the gate, to only find someone climbing out with an empty bag, moaning at me because I was cruel not to let him have his daily treats !!! So I told him I was going to find out where he lived and throw some rat poison to his dogs because thats basically what he was doing to my pony by feeding him all this sugar.
I then told him I would report him to the RSPCA for cruelty to animals if I ever found him in my field again, especially as he now fully understood the dangers of feeding my pony fruit again. I also through in some choice swear words to my shame, but I was fuming.
I really hope your horse recovers from her lami, and that the offending apples have done no more damage.

OMG....what a booger.

I kept finding scores of apples in my paddocks too.....people just don't realise what harm they can do.

So I put signs up...nice polite ones with smiley faces because i didn't want to pee anyone off.

Still the apples came.....and I got mad:mad:

So I put a sign on each fence post (the laminator nearly exploded) saying

DO NOT FEED THE HORSES.
NO apples
NO carrots
NO mints

YOU are making the horses ill !!!

Since then - no more apples;)

Hope your girl is ok....x

How is she doing now? An improvement through the day?

Thanks for thinking of us, well her apple fest doesnt seem to have made her any worse so she's about the same really (which I'm sooooo relieved about!). I went and bought some speedi beet today to see if that would tempt her as she is really not keen on food...should have saved my money  the old bat wouldnt even look at it. She's only interested in eating the railings around the school. I'm thinking of mincing some up to feed her with the pills :D But she has had some hay so thats good!

Glad to hear she seems ok. Having a laminitic myself I know how worrying it is if something happens whereby they are exposed to potentially lethal amounts of sugar, absolute nightmare, hope she continues to be ok and the twit keeps well away with their flaming apples in future!

Glad to hear that she is doing ok...give it another couple of days and hopefully everything will be out of her system. Can you tempt her with any chaff feed if she is not keen on hay?
