Moon is lame....not a little bit lame, very lame

It's an abscess, close to bursting but it's still gonna take its time. Moreton is in 4 days time so looking very doubtful.

Sorry, very self-pitying but this always seems to happen just at the wrong time!!

Hope she recovers soon, well in 4 days actually.

Abcesses do seem to cause huge reactions until they have burst then hey presto.

Typical though, fingers crossed for you

That's really bad luck, you deserve some GOOD luck, get out and start kissing chimney sweeps or something.
Hope she's ok for Moreton, if not you'll have to come and get little white pony going

Cheers guys, farrier came out last night and is coming again tonight (oh the joys of having a farrier that will do anything for you
smirk.gif
) So hopefully if it's gonna burst (gonna be at coronet band I think) then he can stick a pad on and we may have a slim chance of going.
SM, good luck with white one tomorrow, I may have to come nick him to play with if my current one doesnt come right soon!!

Horse why do we bother! At least he's very lame which probably does mean its close to bursting although I tend to think your chances of making moreton are slim. Where are you going after moreton?

Can you not get the farrier to open it? We always try to do this as they seem to heal up within a day or two, and rarely do we poultice them on liveries as it's damned difficult when they live out on a huge acreage..
We just spray loads of antiseptic in, plug with cotton wool soaked in S tar and that's it.. The few we have done "properly" with soaking and wearing a boot take approx twice as long to heal to my annoyance.
I hope it opens soon but it does look too near to the event? Anything else to take?

I'm sure you wouldn't but for gawd's sake don't let a vet start ferreting around, cutting it open. He'll be off for months and it will only make it worse!

We use our farrier to access any abcesses and sorry ours haven't ever been off for months! Round here they get a thing the locals call granite poisoning, which is severe lameness which is relieved the minute the source is found and allowed to drain. We think because the ground is full of minute granite chippings they work their way into the foot and cause an infection.
I can only advise on the horses we have here, and almost all get this granite poisoning the first few months of retiring and having their shoes off for the first time in their lives. The soles are soft until a few months of use so vulnerable to infection.
I think we'll agree to disagree on this, what we do works and I'm sure slow and repeated poulticing does too, but the quickest relief is the farrier allowing the build up of fluid to drain...
