Doug has now decided to play "bolting"

My friend who rode him yesterday rode him again today whilst I rode another horse, we went for a little trot and canter round the fields, both ponies were fine, had a little spook at something first time round, but second time round Doug just blew his head, he spooked, bronked and bolted with her, she fell off and got knocked out. I had no idea what to do thankfully horse I was riding was ace and didnt move, no idea where Doug had gone, but he did not stop for anything. He has NEVER done this to that extent, he can "bomb off" and mess around, but never like that.

He is starting to become a very hot little horse even though he is just an average native pony, but now almost dangerously naughty. I really need someone to come and sort him out, any takers?!

His work load needs to be upped as he has far to much energy.

I have now been told by A LOT of people in the space of about 2 minutes he is dangerous...great, thanks

Perhaps start with what he is being fed in case something is making him more fizzy than necessary, certainly not a fun ride with that sort of behaviour

hope your friend ok

Has his behavoir changed very abruptly i.e. from 1 day to the next? Have you changed anything in his routine/tack recently? And what is his weekly work load?

I don't think it sounds likely but it could be worth having some one out to check his back etc just incase he is doing something strange like trapping a nerve that hurts so he explodes to try and get rid of the pain.

As long as he is bucking / messing about make sure you ride in company or some one knows exactly where you are going and how long you will take!!
Once you have ruled that out, I would suggest upping his work load.
If you can, lunge before you ride to take the tickle out of his feet.
If you can only ride a few time a week make sure that you do alot of work (ie 1.5 - 2hrs) combining schooling with hacking. Don't increase the work load by adding more fast work this will probably just rev him up more do loads of steady trotting and active 'power' walking.

Possibly put a stronger bit in (if you are confidant you won't abuse it) to give you a bit more control/ leverage if he decided to buck/ clear off. Best way to stop bucks is to haul on one rein hard! (They can't buck with their head bent to their shoulder)

If you are not sure that you can cope ask a more experienced rider to step, in as bolting is not some thing you want to be come a habit.

Good luck!

I don't really know what to suggest besides what Felicity has already said . If he is genuinley fizzy etc have you considered a calmer? They really do take the edge off of them if needs be. I also found because i pyscologically (sp) thought Darcy would be calmer because he was being fed it , he almost picked up on this and he did gel out a lot more.

Is he out 24/7 ?

If it helps - I've been told that D is dangerous - get rid of him far too many times to remember now .

Thanks everyone

Well, he isnt "fizzy" as such, he can be very hard to get going, but if one thing happens, like he spooks thats it, he just flies, bronks and is impossible to stop.

I havent changed anything at all, he gets ridden everyday, rarely has a day off, school, hack, jump, xc etc

I do think I need a stronger bit, but I hate them. What would be my options there? A gag? I just dont like putting a strong bit on a young horse...

Possibly a different noseband?

Just wondering

I put a grackle on m'ned to stop him crossing his jaw and peeing off and he goes very well in it. He's just in a loose-ring french link .x

Yeah, I have a grackle and a drop to try actually, might try the grackle later. I really just think I need someone a lot bigger and stronger than me to give him a lesson in manners
