So, I have just put my little horse up for sale with the thought that I would try to sell her and then go looking for a new neddie (mine went on sale on 2 x free websites on Tuesday- not in a massive rush) and suddenly without even looking I have found the horse I really really want to buy. ALL READY! I actually know of the horse in a round about way and he would be perfect for me.

But I need to sell mine first as

a) I only have 3 stables (and have 3 horses) and

b) four horses is just way too much (I work full time and have my own business too)

I could afford to buy the new horse but wouldnt have anywhere to put him. I might be able to get the vendors to keep him for a while, but I have no way of knowing if mine will sell next week or next month or not at all... Aaagh why is it so difficult. It wouldnt be so bad but I know just how long it took me to find anything last time when I was looking (think it was about 12 months

I could buy new horse and put it in livery but thats not ideal at all and who knows how long it would be for.

I could put my horse in livery, but I would feel very exposed not having anywhere for her to come back to if she didnt find a buyer

Should I drop my price right down on my horse - nervous about doing that as there was a post the other day with lots of people saying they wouldnt look at a cheap horse.

I would get next to nothing if I try to sell to a dealer without buying one. Also I want my horse to go to a good home and would never sell her for any money if I didnt think it would be right for her.

Dare not loan her out in case she came back

I think I would be building another stable. Ideal horses are few and far between and horses are not selling very quickly so you could still be trying to sell in 3 months and missed out on ideal horse for the sake of building a new or temporary stable. I wouldn't compromise on price this quickly or people will think there is something wrong.

I'd try and keep two of them out 24/7. Do you have a shelter in the field?

I'd be wary of dropping the price if the one you have for sale is worth it. It's not the people who WOULDN'T look at a cheap horse you really need to worry about, it's the ones who WOULD!

Thank you so much for answering my post.

Unfortunately i dont think my paddocks could cope with 24/7 living out - they are like paddy fields and I have a very impressive new lake as its so flat around here and there has been so much rain. Also at least 2 of them would need to live out as I couldnt leave him on his own.

FranSurrey I know what you mean, I really want Dee Dee to go to a good home, she is a lovely mare and very trusting. I would sooner lose the new horse than let her go somewhere unsuitable

Building another stable is an interesting idea, but getting permission around here is not easy or quick

Sale livery is a good idea, maybe will think on that.

If it was summer I would risk it as they could all live out!

Have you a hay barn? Move hay/bedding and cover with tarp and section off a space for a horse as a temp measure?

I think i would consider either letting 2 live out - i know the weather is [****] and the fields are a bog but spring is only around the corner (ever the optomist!) or trying to put together some sort of temporary shelter. That way you get your new horse and can find the right home for your girl - more people will be looking in the next month or two as the weather picks up.

Go and buy your horse of a lifetime! Don't let it slip through your fingers if you have the money to buy it. Keep it at livery, preferably where it is for a month and drop the price on your own horse (it WILL sell if priced well). Dropping the price on a horse does open you up to many more viewers however you can screen these people by asking them to email you and having a standard response to as many questions as possible, hence just sending out the same email to each enquiry (works for me anyway when I am selling horses), then choose the ones you think are most suitable for the horse and set up viewing days.

Good luck!
