I let the akita x off today after some intensive long lining and the previous rescue foster giving stark warning not to let him off..................I needed to know what he was like off he has energy and it needs to be burnt...........he was perfect, he came everytime he was called for his tasty treat and was fabulous

next I will use a stooge smaller bait dog from the rescue and test his pray drive from a distance

just out of curiousity but have you ever been able to teach a siberian husky to recall?
i know someone who is thinking of getting one and they insisted i was lying when i told them
they shed like crazy,
can jump over a 3 foot wall and are very hard to teach to recall so will need to be kept on a lead when out?

Yes i know it will probly be a disaster but someone told them they were hyperallergenic dogs so now they want one.....
 
Aru, can't help much regarding breed traits (Sibes are hypoallergenic, really?!) but my GSD pops a 1m hurdle for fun at training class without touching it, I could imagine a husky could do the same.

Must say I have never tried, but one of my clients have a husky and they let him off, he is apart from all hsukies I have ever met, calm, lazy laid back he is fab.

I do let my akita off and she is really good be she does get deaf when so far away then quicken her pace when we try to catch up, and gives a cheeky vocal

she could run if she wanted but she never does but I only let her off in secure fields,

they shed like mad things though.
and they are apparently are quite capable of jumping walls up to 5 foot sometimes 6 especially if there is a bin/any horizontal board etc beside it.

How do i know??
because i researched the damn breed before when i was thinking about getting one....somethng these people dont seem to have done...grrrrr

sigh...i really hope they dont go out and pick up some puppy farmer puppy then abandon it when it gets bored and restless in their lovely suburban garden.Huskys apparently also like to dig...it does sound like a trainwreck waiting to happen to be honest the more i think about it...

Im woried as my auntie who lives next to these otherwise lovely people.She has a outdoors cat which they are quite attached to,who likes to just chill around all day sit on neighbours wall etc, and huskys and small furries dont mix....

I did try telling them that poodles and wheaten terriers are hyperallergenic to even that dog that the obamas have, portugese water dog is it?
or that they might be able to find a dog in a rescue that was but i dont think they were listening.

I've heard several stories about their capability to escape. I don't know if they can jump over a 3 foot wall but I don't doubt they can somehow escape over a 3 foot wall if the wall is not especially designed to keep huskies in. And as the information on this site mentions http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/siberianhusky.htm , if they can't get over a fence, they have no problems with digging free.
 
I would think a husky coulf easily hop a 3 foot wall and as suggested they can dig better than a jcb, esp when kept as lone pets in a bored and barren environment..........with the recall I have no doubt u could teach them to an extent, but im sure if a small furrie popped up "they are a gonner" they have a high prey drive.
The cat will be number 1 victim if the dog is not brought up with them

Keep trying the discourage them , esp if they are not going to make themselves knowledgable and have alot of time and energy to give.

Lovely fluffy cute little dog sounds right up this ladys alley...

...and yes i know i shouldnt encourage her to be getting a dog at all since she hasnt even bothered to research them but in this case it's gonna be damage control i think....

plus they are slightly more suitable than a husky and if worst comes to worst.... id say a little bichon is more rehomable that a rampaging husky

Is it just me?

Dog looks really fantastic/striking/people comment on it = dog is of a working/high drive breed, needs a hell of a lot of exercise if not a job/firm handling/brain training

And so many people only look at the first half of the equation and buy them with only that in mind.

For some weird reason Huskies and Malamuts have become popular in Greece and you see them all over Athens (either as cute pups with people or as abandonned strays all over the place). Just when you think that new dog owners can't get any stupidier, they just go and surprise you!
 
Otto is a foot and a half of spangle and he could clear a 3 foot fence with his paws tied behind his back! In fact 4 and 5 foot presents don't seem to present much of a challenge either, and there is always the option of just going through (as he did when presented with my Parent's wooden fence panels)

It makes me laugh the amount of people who tell me i`m cruel for not letting my boys off lead over the nature reserve and that there husky has brilliant recall. These said brilliant recallable huskies are at that point over the otherside of the nature reserve (about 10-12 acres in size) terrorising others and their dogs whilst they shout at the top of their lungs for the dogs who just simply aint coming back.
We drive 35 minutes to the nearest fully enclosed tennis courts so they can run around off lead, At 6am this morning I was i was heading back home freezing cold and wet but with a car full of dogs who where happy and tired from their 3 mile run through the local woods in harness doing what they are bred to do.
Some believe that there sibe will be different but they are one breed who can never be trusted yes they could be perfect for 3-4 years of lead coming to call everytime but there will be one day that something in their heads will just click the squirrel, rabbit, pheasent will run across there track and thats it gone, one of Diablo (my youngest sibes) littermates was let off lead from the day she was born they believed she had excellent recall, unfortunately she didnt make it to her first birthday and was found 2 days after she got away from them at the side of a train track

I have at least 3-4 emails a week from people wanting/interested in getting a sibe out of those emails over a month I have about 3 who will have done their research and know what they are getting into, I`m happy to help those who have done their research they are welcome to come over and visit my pack, coming training with us, come to a rally in fact we have a couple coming over this weekend for just that, I`ll help introduce them to good reputable breeders with first class dogs.
Some may think its bad that I dont offer that to everyone who contacts me but I did and people still thought they knew better and two of those couples I mentioned above with the sibes off lead over the park


Sorry for the rant lol this is just such a sensitive subject and it annoys me when people dont do the research and buy this breed purely on looks alone and go a head and either loose them, ruin them or stick them in the nearest rescue because they cant handle them

P.S Loco my malamute on the other hand is fab off lead but even then she only goes off lead in enclosed places i`d never take her to the local woods and let her off I trust her 99% off lead but theres always that 1% where I do believe she could go bye byes at the drop of a hat and I love her far too much to loose her
