He sustained his first horse related injury last night when he brought Ellie in and she stood on his foot!

He is now sporting two very black and swollen broken toes and a swollen foot. He is actually quite proud of his injury, bless him!

He can put on headcollars and rugs without getting them upside down and back to front, and do feeds. Next is for him to master the sitting trot I think

I'll make a horseman out of him yet!

Wow, he can put head collars on? my OH doesn't know which bit of kit goes where, so he's in charge of doing the water and erm not much else!
grin.gif

...Im off to train my soft OH who thinks its 'too cold' every time he comes to the yard (i always offer him a fork whilst telling him manual labour warms you up but he never buys it!!)
grin.gif

haha, my OH has never been trodden on yet, and happily wears flip-flops around the horses, in spite of my horror!
also, to my annoyance, he can lead 2 of my girls together easier than i can... i think i've worked out that it's because he weighs about half as much again as i do, so he doesn't get flung about if one of them tries to zoom off or spin round!
he can put on headcollars and lead around and take ace pics and vids, that'll do for now! oh, and he LOVES emptying the muck trailers - woo hoo, result.
wink.gif

YAY well done him...nice to have a helping hand out of OH's isnt it?..

Mine is soo well trained by me of course..LOL he does the mucking out, haynets, water, rugs, feed, pick feet out catching, can do all that, but tacking up Nop not yet anyway....thats for future training!! LOL

My OH offered to turn Roe out for me for a week during the summer (she is in at night all year round) to give me a break and as he started his long summer off (he teaches).

What was supposed to be a week turned into nearly a month, as in his words it made him get up and not waste the mornings in bed.

He isnt really horsey and just learnt how to put headcollars on from helping me out. He would muck out too sometimes.

I think he secretly enjoyed it as he now refers to Roe as 'his horse' and their 'summer of love'.

Sadly mine is yet to master putting head collars on, usually he will stand holding one out hoping that the horses will put them on themselves
grin.gif
if he does attempt to put one on, it has never failed to make me laugh.

My non-horsey OH is also quite handy around the yard - he mucks out, leads, does rugs and stuff and fixes things I break (like the time I was de-cobwebbing and managed to somehow pull part of the 150 year old wall out... actually, I know exactly how I did it and daughter could see it coming, but we'll gloss over that... ) His moment of glory, though, has to be him leading the pony round on the showground in her pink fleece and travel boots... sweet
wink.gif

Edited to add: The pony was wearing the fleece and travel boots - not him...

Mine has gone from being super non horsey to really interested. He loves them now especially my mad mare! she seems a lot better with him than me,he gives her lots of cuddles! He rugs them, feeds them, picks feet out, rides one of them, does jobs around the yard, poo picks, comes to comps with me. We are a lot closer now as we can share an interest too which is nice,we're off to Olympia next friday and it seems we are shopping for him this time!

Mine has been a godsend in the last few months while I have been ill then injured. Taking two at a time up a boot high water and mud filled track getting muddy and wet while I wade behind with the other two. Good at taking head collars off and on rugs we are working on. Will do waters and barrows to the muck heap for me. Not good but can if asked muck out. Has even been known to ride once in a blue moon if I tack up.

Mine can only put a headcollar on if the buckle is undone. I normally just undo the clip and pull it over his ears, but that REALLY confuses my OH! He still can't tie a quick release knot after 13 years. (I think he can but makes out that he can't so he won't have to do anything with him
mad.gif
) He'll put him out after the farrier for me if he's off work but won't get him in as ther are 4 very similar greys in the field and he worries he'll get the wrong one(again just a ploy as Arch is the only one with a pink nose.) He'll do feeds and fill waterbuckets but won't do hay as he doesn't want to get covered in it and only mucked out when I had a dislocated finger.

He wasn't keen on dogs when I first met him though and was furious when I agreed to take on a rescue dog while he was away with work (only gone 5 days, and I knew he'd come round
blush.gif
) but when we lost him 3 years later he was the one going out looking for another one the next day, so maybe there's some hope!

You will kick youself once you have turned him horsey, believe me. My OH has been riding since he was small, when I first went over to his home he introduced me to his tackroom as "the magical place where you take dirty tack, that comes out clean".
4months into the hunting season with him and I have realised that is because he has 1st and second horses, puts all the dirty tack in the tackroom after her has finished, and leaves it for me and his mum to do.

well it took me 5yrs but my OH has finally got the "if you cant beat them join them" message about a 2 years ago... at a three day show... i think it was so much horse overload he didnt get to speak to anyone unless it was about horses!

he can now successfully... (normally while im chatting to the other liverys
blush.gif
)
- Put a headcolar on
-lead
-pick out feet
-groom
-Muck out (not to my standards but he can!)
-make feeds
- make and put up haynets
-change rugs

And more recently has learnt to:
-walk, trot and canter (sort of)
-untack
-boot up
-leg me up
-put saddle on... genrally in the right place

Next lesson is how to put the briddle on!

He is also really good a sweeping! my patch at the yard never looks as clean as it does when he comes with me!

He is also AMAZING at taking photos to...(see siggie for an example) ive not brought a professional on for a good 4 years now... his always get us looking better than they do and i have the luxary of selecting my favorite fence so that the color of the poles complement us.. hehe

Mine came partially trained. He could just about ride when I met him, but only ever at a riding school, so he didn't know about stable management.

Nearly 5 years later, he can do everything (ok, he can only muck out straw, but that's just cos I'm too OCD to let him near my shavings!). He does tacking up, booting up (not bandaging though, yet!), turn out, bring in, muck out, rugs, the whole lot. He mainly hacks, but can walk/trot/canter and pop a small jump (he's not William Fox-Pitt, but he gets to the other side, still on top, and doesn't sock the horse in it's teeth lol). And he knows when to come and get me for advice.

Good job he borrows/shares a friends horse 3 days a week, otherwise I would have lost mine!!
grin.gif
It took a few weeks of persuasion, but he now gets up at 5am to do "his" horse before work on his weekdays. And he's even stopped complaining about it!

He still needs training in a few things though. Like paying attention to horses he doesn't ride (ie mine!). And how to take good photographs - not ones where the horse resembles an upside down reindeer and I look like I'm removing her back teeth. And how to clean tack - that might be tomorrow's lesson....

What it is to be a minority!!

As a rare male in this world it does make me smile. I have 3 horses: a 17.3 eventer, a sharp NF/TB X and a flesh eating NF companion pony. My 'OH' has zero interest and my daughter an occasional dalliance provided no mucking out is involved and she rides my big lad who is quiet if I am around.
I run them on my own and use the yard as my retreat!!

My OH was not horsey at all when we first met..Over the years he has become so horsey that he was given the choice of spending money on IVF treatments or a horse on both ocassions he chose a horse.

He now will give dressage ago loves his lessons jumps and loves the big grey pet. He actually pulled his mane yesterday but hasn't mastered tail plaiting yet

Infact he is happy to spend a tenner on horse shampoo for the big grey pet
blush.gif
but moans if mine costs more than a couple of quid
tongue.gif

My OH used to ride as a kiddie but gave up when his parents said he wouldn't be getting his own pony!

He's fabulous with them - can do all jobs around the yard (though I've never asked him to tack up) and had a few goes on River before he got ill. The best thing about him however is that he NEVER moans about the time, money, continual horse chat or smell!!! I think he might be perfect!

The only man I have to train is my dad, who loves Scooby (although he ALWAYS calls him Snoopy!
mad.gif
). He's a right pain the neck when he comes to the yard though... I was working on an own-a-pony day and showing a little girl how to put on a bridle, and he was practically climbing over the fence (we were in the school) trying to show me that I hadn't done up a buckle right, while the poor child looked on in terror at the crazy man! I HAD done the bridle right, as well.
tongue.gif
He does have his uses though - he'll fill and carry water buckets, and he's useful for throwing things at when I'm trying to carry two saddles and four bridles whilst stopping Scooby from demolishing the school fence... The one time he rode Scooby, he fell off and ended up in casualty, so I'm a bit hesitant to let him ride again now!

I like this thread. My VERY non horsy oh has gradually:

Stopped complaining about the amount of time I spend with B
Stopped complaining about the amount of money I spend on B
He can put on a headcoller the right way up, (well most of the time). well actually, he holds it open, hoping it's the right way up & b puts his nose in for him.
He is a superb feed maker upper and always remembers to make sure the porridge is soaked (beet)
Will do water & hay.
He can put a jacket on and take off (rug)
Can catch in and turn out efficiently.
helps me poo pick & occasionally poo picked on his own.
let me choose the 'good' car specifically for it's horsebox towing capabilities.
Never complains about the state i keep the little car in, (my muddy little run around/tackroom/shed)

He has even sustained a horsy injury when an obnoxious 3 year old barged him into a gate and cut his finger, however, that's maybe not a positive, as he did let the 3 year old escape and then moaned about his finger.

However he still:
Complains about hairy 'numnums' in the washing machine.
Doesn't like hair very much, so won't groom.
Doesn't like pee very much, so won't muck
Calls b a knob when he can't catch him, even though he is striding towards him with hi viz waterproof trousers that swish when he walks!

He even now encourages me to ride & compete as often as I can, although i think he has an alterior motive as he's getting broody, so i think he wants me to get as much in as i can while i can.

My other half got bitten last night too! LOL
I feel bad, as my lovely OH was helping me do the late night skipping out, and my horse has never bitten anyone else, but last night was the second time it's happened to my OH.

Not sure what's going on, I think he sticks his fingers to close to my horse's mouth?

OH can fetch him in (and bring the right horse!) ,brush him and has had a little go on him too. I was really impressed as on his first go he was doing some sort of rising trot around the jumping feild! went to put the tack away and when I came back tote was smelling rather minty and it turned out he had given him a whole pack of x strong mints in one go for being a good boy! So he is now Totes new best friend

I met my OH when he was over in Cyprus on Business for 3 days......we then spent much time on the telephone and he came over 2 months later for a week long visit. Now during the phone conversations he had said he would like to ride again and when he came over could we go out together in the mountains when I asked if he could ride he alluded to "riding regularly when he lived in East Africa"

I duly mounted him on my friends 23 year old ex racehorse and now retired ex Greek National Juniors Showjumping Team horse (he was considered the sanest in the yard!) and we set off. Apart from the odd "oh my god" and "ohhhh [****]" he was doing really well until we got the the big field on the way back where we normally let the horses have their heads. I asked if he was ok to canter suggesting he kept a light contact on Alides but not too much as he will take off if he speeds up too much sit down and gently bring him back...James's reaction was "yes fine understood shall I lead" .

I remember the feeling of immense pride and joy at having finally met a horsey man (my ex hated my horse and resented every minute I was with him) when James suddenly did the most impressive ponly club kick I have ever seen and Alides disapeared off like pooh off a spade! how he stayed on I will never know as he was bouncing around like a pea on a drum and clutching onto the mane. My horse was being not a lot of help and was so over excited by the whole occasion he was galloping on the spot and merely digging himself into a huge trench
grin.gif
Thankfully Alides bing a wise old soul realised uh oh muppet on board stopped and started eating a fig tree whilst I jumped out of our recently dug trench and hammered up the field.

My loving reaction was "what the bloody hell did you do that for"

It transpires that the "Riding regularly in East Africa" had happened when he was at Boarding school there aged 8! 47 years previously
blush.gif

I had effectively just taken out a Novice rider on a 3 hour hack up in the mountains over some terrifying terrain on a very fit strong horse and thrown in a bit of gallop for good measure
grin.gif

The rest of our romantic week was spent getting intimate with muscle rubs and hot radox baths
grin.gif
and I won't even mention the chaffing!

Didn't seem to put him off though....he went on the weekend course my trainer ran for Young Horses and can now happily free school and double lunge and is nagging to get on top of Vardi, although lesson learnt he has admitted to my trainer that he only has "cling on" status and will need teaching.

We bred 2 from my partners ID x TB mare, we have one each now and I do the most riding.

Maybe we should start a clique for convertees. We can discuss subjects such as trying to find a pair of breeches in the local tack shop only to find 4 rails of ladies and 3 rails of kids and being told they don't stock mens but could order some.
smile.gif

My non horsey OH is brilliant! He has a malamute so always comes out with me which a great way for us to spend time together and we have come to see it as quite a special thing we have.

He can now:
bring in Big Dog (his name for K!) though he nearly got kicked by another horse bringing him in which was a bit scary!
brush Big Dog
put his jacket (rug) on & off
put his saddle on
ride a bit, he has a good seat actually, proven when K spooked at a hose.

He loves coming up to the yard and I love him coming up. He's the 1st BF who has ever embraced my hobby, I love that!

Well I'm very lucky because whilst I've been ill my OH just took over the duties of the yard for me for over a week - I didn't see a horse at all! He completely looked after all three of ours - mixed feeds/fed/hayed/turned out/mucked out/changed rugs/brought back in - you name it - he did it!
