I bought a lovely pony from Oaklands, he was a real treasure and the riding school has been going for ages.

If your OH is a novice I'd say go there and you'll get reasonably good instruction........ but make sure you ask when you book the lesson how many others are in the ride. Best is to have a private lesson TBH. I had a friend who had a lesson there and there was far too many in the ride and she was just plonked onto a very unresponsive cob with a mouth like iron and everyone just seemed to be doing their own thing and just trotting around. A total waste of money. The instructress had given up and just let everyone get on with it apparently.

Budleigh RS is in a nice area, but anything decent there is, like many other RS's, over-used to the point of boredom, poor things. Not really fair, but happens I know in a lot of places. You'll get some nice hacking for sure, but the horse has probably already done the same ride (and its ALWAYS the same ride!!!) more than once that day before.

Budlake at Chudleigh is another option? Personally I'd steer clear, but know a lot of people do frequent it. PM me if you want to know any more.

Finlake is very close to us but I think probably better for hacking. Budleigh is a long way (we're at Moretonhampstead/Teign Valley) so Oaklands makes sense and I would have booked him in for private lessons anyway as I think they're much the best, even if you do have to work so much harder!

Yes, sorry, "Finlake" is what I meant!!!

Gosh....... there's gotta be something nearer to you than Oaklands in Exeter FFS!! Just shows how few decent riding schools there are these days:(

If I were to reccommend anything, I'd probably suggest fitzworthy, but that's quite a distance, in cornwood.. I know the people who own and run it and you could do far worse than spend time there..
