OH has lovingly bought me some Woof Wear boots for valentines (bless him!). Have just turned up and tried them on, and well, there's no way the top velcro strap will do up!! My calf completely fills the boot lol! So disappointingly, they will be going back.

So, oh lovely HHOers, what alternatives are there? Along the same lines but made for big ol' calved ladies like myself. Thanking you!

you need to say how large a calve you have..average "cosmetic" boots seems to have a circumference of 14 -15" but yet riders have much much bigger calves!

to put it into perspective I have a very slim friend (size 8-10) who is a rider and with the Ariat tall boots - she had to go into a large. Another friend (size 12) needed an XL..

I'm not sure what style you have in mind, but I've got the Ariat Grasmeres with the wider calf option and they are fantastic. You pull the laces tight to fit your leg in any case. They are good for yard work and you can ride in them. Your OH might have to love you a bit more to stretch the budget a teensie bit further, but they are so worth it!

K, I have 19" calves and have not had to get anything overly special.

Show boots, I have mountain horse, they come in various calf fittings and fit mine in x wide. Also Dublin do wide calf long boots that fit me too. In fact normal Dublin River boots fit my calves (the slightly Dubarry looking ones).

Hunter Argyle Wellies fit me (But not their 'wide' fit ladies ones)

I think it is important to realise that to get a good fit they will be a little tight to start with and I always put key ring rings on the zips to start with.

I totally feel your pain though! :)

Are they the Woof Wear winter ones Kub? I have those and just folded the top strap over as the next one down only just manages to do up... Long boots are a pain for those of us with bigger calves (and short legs if yo're like me!!!)

Argh I feel your pain too! I saved for 18 months to buy myself a pair of boots for shows that I had fallen in love with. Bought them at Olympia this year but stupidly only tried one on. Got them home to discover that my left calf is fractionally fatter than my right and wouldn't do up!! :(

I did lose some Christmas weight (or at least I like to think so, maybe they just stretched :o) and now they're fine, and it's a great incentive to not put it back on!

But you didn't need to know all of that :D Mountain Horse do some nice ones in lots of different widths, and I think Mark Todd do too :D

It happened to me too last week only they were in a on line sale, they said they were 41cm around the calf so I measured mine which was 40. Perfect you would think but alas no I struggled to get my ankle in let alone my calf, cannot return them as they were a sale item. So now need to sell them and go into a shop and try boots on in the future.

Another important thing to remember is to measure your calves with jods on!! I made same mistake but had measured my calf naked and it can put quite a difference on.

Glad you like the key ring idea, don't pull too hard (i.e if they will never zip up) coz you will just break the zip :)

I feel the pain. One calf is 19", the other is 20.5" (post 'riding' accident!) so I'll never find long boots / chaps to fit off the shelf (not according to the Dery House cataogue anyway). If I compete it will be in jodhpur boots only. :(

Would be interested to know where you got the MH ones from in XWide if you can remember? :D I have 18" calves and will be buggered if I'm buying fuller fillies boots - not that they're ever in stock anyway lol I can only find the MH ones upto a Wide and even then I'd have to wear a size 9 (am a 6!).

I can only sympathise as I have same problem, size 5 1/2 feet, 47cm calves ( after diet !) and long legs too so always have a nightmare. last boots were made to measure which cost a fortune but actually are not great, too wide at top where my legs come back in again. l looked at the MH ones and they all seemed too small, but equitector sizes looked an option and gaiters I am ok with the english gaiter company ones except they are a little short.

I have the same problem, I really wanted some smart boots you know the trendy suede ones! and tried every pair I could see at HOYS and not one pair fitted :( BUT the boots I have found that fit my wide calves are Mountain Horse Snow riders X-wide short lovely to ride in and warm too. Also Ariat mudbuster wellies come up really big, and for shows I have a pair of Equitector long boots X-wide short. For general riding i use jodh boots and chaps.

I had the same problem when I was looking for a pair of leather boots. I couldnt get anything to fit me, went to a 'posh' riding shop, tried some better boots on and was told I had large calves and odd shaped legs . My calves are just over 16 inches! Ive always struggled, bought zipped boots in the end and suffered for weeks trying to break them in. Why dont the manufacturers realise we all dont have 14 inch calves :(
