At present, we have a Toyota Landcruiser and a Fiesta. My OH uses the Toyota for erveryday use and I also use it to pull my Ifor 505 with 15 HH horse in it.
We initially bought such a big 4x4 because I had a 16.2HH and also took my friend out all the time with me.
Now we have a smaller horse and I no longer take anybody out with me.

So, my OH has decided to sell Toyota due to cost and it looks like I am going to have to get a vehicle to tow with, or part-ex trailer for little box.

My question ...... what car/vehicle can I get to tow with? I don't really want a great, whacking 4x4 like we have now as that would defeat the object of getting rid of Toyota.

Would I be better off getting a little box financially?

Oh, the dilemma!

If you don't need a double trailer you could consider trading it in for a single and pulling with a diesel family car? We pull our 16.2 ISH in a single Ifor with a 2.2 L diesel Mondeo at the mo. Width wise the horse gets more room in a single than in a double. The Mondeo is reasonably economical to run too.

Have a look at the Subaru Forester - a miniature 4x4

I'm not sure of the towing capacity, but OH's brother has one and has towed a trailer with it, he really likes it

Ali2 - I'm not sure it's worth down grading my trailer for what I'll gain weight wise. 505 is 900Kg unladen and 401 is 770Kg.

MizElz - Hmm, I quite like the Forester but I think they're quite expensive, it's worth looking into though.

The only thing I would say about a little box ( which I have as have not taken trailer test and passed my test after 97) is that they do cost to run! Not strictly the fuel - its just the 2 x MOT, 2 x Tax, 2 x insurance and so it goes on. As you have a trailer and are able to tow I would be inclined to get a smaller 4X4

We used to have a SWB Isuzu Trooper. It was the best car I've ever had. Lovely to drive, quick and nippy, easy to park and manouver, very reliable and cheaper to buy and run than other 4x4's. Proper 4x4 as has low range unlike Freelanders so easy to get off muddy fields etc. I would have one now but we need to be able to tow 3.5t so have a Disco ATM.

We have two ponies - 13.1h and a currently 12.2h who will make 14h.

We use a 3l diesel Merc estate, no we can't tow the full weight of the trailer, but we can tow what we have, and thats whats important.

A big diesel estate might be worth looking at, however ours isn't cheap to run with a 3l engine!! We use it for heavy, dirty work (its a workhorse, not a luxury car!!!) and have a Focus & 2 Ka's as run arounds.
