My OH driving out in his 'white van' came across 2 horses with lady riders. He stayed back to give them room on a windy lane. A mile or so on he had room to pass. Neither rider thanked him or even aknowledged him, too busy gossiping. Neither had Hi Viz.

I told him he should have stopped and given them advice on how to treat thoughtful traffic and get HI VIz as they were not very visible 'til the last moment.

Riders like that give the rest of us a bad name.

I do make a point of acknowledging all drivers, inc those who don't slow down (in some vain hope they will realise they didn't slow down and feel bad that I am still polite, if you know what I mean). but I'm never quite sure if people can tell you've said thanks - if you wave/nod head etc., that assumes they are watching you not the road. I do sometimes find myself doing it multiple times, just in case !!

I have been known to lower my car window and shout 'Thank you!' to riders who ignore me and I have occasionally stopped and remonstrated with rude riders, particularly the one who could take her hands off the reins to wave to a friend but not to acknowledge my slowing down and passing extremely wide and slow.

I am always particularly careful to acknowledge any-one who makes any allowance for me and my horse, in the hope that they will get into the habit, if they're not already.
