Help me please..... I am still so undecided on this beach trip which is now in a couple of weeks time.

I did decide to bite the bullet and put my name down to take my horse. My last thread on this had lots of mixed reviews, so I went with the go to the beach prognosis.

However, I am now not so sure as last week I put my back out (lumbar sciatica) and am on lots of tablets and strict no riding or much else really by the doctor. The beach trip falls one day after my two week ban, so horse will not of been ridden for in fact nearly 3 weeks due to sick children and bad back.

I am now not so sure whether to go as he will be more excited then usual and I'm not sure after not riding with bad back I would have the strength to fight him for a whole day. Seems more of a stressful event than fun at the mo. However, I have so many people (non horsey) butting in saying I will regret not going, horse will love it etc etc. I would love to go, but not sure its the right time with all things considered. Its not cheap, so would really want to enjoy it! Also don't want it to all go wrong and I regret it. But what if I don't get the chance to go again and do regret it? Please please talk soime sense into me, and tell me what you would do???

If I am completely honest I would probably still go - but then again, I know myself it would be a silly idea and even if horse loved it, I probably wouldn't!
I think you know yourself its probably not a good idea - you may put your back out again and then its ANOTHER two weeks off horse getting more wound up, vicious circle.
There will be more beach trips, but you only have one back :)
Saying that, it is up to you.

I love riding on the beach, luckily my yard is in the sand dunes so not far to go for me :D
However despite our proximity to the beach all the horses tend to be a bit more on there toes on the beach, even though all have been down many times. We were down on last week and my normally lazy, non going forward horse was doing some loverly extended work without any aids from me
Normally I would say go for it, nerves can be got over but if you are not physically 100% I wouldnt take the risk, there will be another time.

perhaps, though, even if you didn't enjoy it as such it would still be a valuable experience in terms of feeling a sense of achievement - despite the situation you went for it anyway and you coped fine. this may make you feel more confident about going for things in future. being sensible, maybe it's not the best idea, but i'm just suggesting there may be other benefits even if you do find it stressful.

best of luck

You see, this is exactly the problem. I know its not the best idea, but I also know if I did do it I would have a great sense of achievement knowing that I handled him in that situation. I am so confused its driving me mad!!! I envisage galloping down the beach with him, and that doesn't worry me. Its when we are supposed to be trotting and he is cantering instead and I will really be having to hold him back (and I know 100% he would do this as he does it on any hack I go on with another horse!!). I hate moments like this, I am the worst decision maker at the best of times!!

Wouldn't go myself. You might get your beach ride then not be able to ride at all for the rest of the spring, so I wouldn't think it was worth it.

Just my opinion of course.

All opinions count!! So thank you. For some reason I feel guilty for thinking about not going, I don't know why I feel guilty though!!!

No - I would not go - you are not fit enough and that enormous expanse of water can be extremely frightening for a horse - not sure if you have been before.

You could put your healing back by months!

Sorry i would not go either but because i would be more worried about an unfit ned doing the prancing dancing looning and as much as everyone will say "we wont gallop too much" once the adrenaline (sp) gets going in the horses brain you try telling them to watch their legs etc. dont get me wrong if your horse is very fit and being ridden by someone else whilst you are off i would have a different opinion but i do think its unfair to expect your horse to do what will be a taxing day without giving him the work requried

I'm another vote for No Go. Personally I would just try and do lots of riding and hacking over the coming spring and summer months and if I was feeling laid back and super cool about it all then I'd hire a box and go with a friend in September.

I think your right, another time would be better. Especially as only just got my confidence back hacking out and have not even been out with another horse for a while. I just really wanted to do it as finally feeling brave enough and not scared of riding out anymore. But worry that not having ridden for that period of time and back not being great that it could all go wrong and would be back to square one.

Why do I feel like I am letting myself down though? Its not like its the only chance I will ever get! Think I'm worried I look like a wimp!!!! lol

Don't do it, it's simply not worth the risk to you or your horse! I'm assuming it's a group ride, which could just boil his brain - take your horse with one other who you know and trust when you're both healthy enough to go - and don't feel that you're letting your horse down, he doesn't even know you'd planned a beach ride for him!
