ok...so when I first bought my horse...he was a plodder, and he is still frustratingly slow on hacks, and at times schooling (which perhaps I need to do more work on with getting him off my leg)...

but when I take him on fun rides or cubbing/hunting, he's totally different...he is strong, to the point I am glad he has a flash and martingale else not sure there'd be much control (he does mini rears when gets frustrated/too wound up). I ride him in a snaffle, so he's not in a strong bit...

his jumping out on grass is getting really forward to the point I barely have to push him into the jumps...
I heard soya oil is good for slow release energy...

but seeing as I have a contrast between slow and ploddy pony / slightly fizzy pony...what's best thing to do?

it can get really frustrating on hacks and when schooling as he just seems to lack energy/excitement/go...and yet on funrides etc I am on the verge of feeling scared of how forward he is....

I prerably don't want him in anything stronger than a snaffle...he seems ok in that, even if strong when doing more 'exciting' things with him...

I'm sure the problems lie more with me as a rider than him....but the contrast in his speed and energy levels when doing various disciplines change so drastically....I have a plodder one discipline...and a pony that's doing mini rears and can't stand still the next...

would you recommend feeding soya oil?
or nothing at all?

he was bit underweight when first bought him, with no muscle at all...he now has quite a nice weight on him, and muscle...

he is also VERY aggitated when in stable for tacking up/grooming...especially when other horses about....

This was him when I bought him 6 months ago

He keeps his weight quite nicely when the grass is good, but loses it quite quickly when it's gone...so I'm assuming give him conditioning cubes and pony nuts in winter as a feed (that's what I gave him when I first bought him....he's now just on pony nuts as a feed after exercise)....

:) He is gorgeous!

I have the same problem tbh; At home on hacks it drives me insane as Ben is so slow. Take him out to the beach/pleasure ride and he's like "woopie" lol

I would keep the feed to high fibre, I am currently feeding SS Lucie Nuts ( lots of it ) and a mugfull of Linseed ( Charnwood Milling ) he seems to be doing much better.

The schooling I can't help you with as I don't do any, I find it uninteresting!
