Does adding oil to feed make horse spooky?

The boy has had extra oil in his feed for about a week/ten days now. He's feeling very fresh! He spooked several times coming in from the field, he was snorting at everything, not his usual dope on a rope at all.

The took him in the school to loose school and he erm, got it out of his system! There were some horses on the yard shouting and he was putting in some excited bucks.

Decided to stop the oil for a bit to see if that helps. He's been a total pain for the last few days coming in from the field, but I was under the impression it wasn't meant to make them fizzy but it's the only thing I can think that's changed in his diet (apart from spring grass!).

Could be the oil as they all react differently, has your horse been on it before and how was your horse affected if so.

Could also be the time of year, most of the horses on our yard are very spooky at the moment.

He was on it a few months ago but a much lower dose and I can't honestly remember.

Have stopped it for now to see if it makes a difference but honestly, it's nothing like him to be spooky!

Well of course it is giving him extra energy, so it could be making him spooky. Different horses react differently to different feeds. It could even be dependent on the type of oil. Rapeseed? Vegetable? Sunflower? Olive? The only way to tell is to do what you are doing and take it out of his diet.

Also bear in mind the spring grass coming through now...

But as said if you take it out of his feed now and he continues to be spooky then likely to be the grass or wind etc?

I wish mine was a little more energetic!!! She normally reacts to the grass but not yet!!!

I tried my lad on some oil, he's always had a tendency to buck, but it definitely made him worse, he even bucked going into trot!!. I stopped giving t him and he settled down again.

IME it does affect different horses in different ways. On my own it was great at first for adding condition but reached a point when he had far more energy from it than his level of work warrants and he became fizzy.

Think you are right to scale back his dose but with the perfect wet and then sunny weather the grass will put a spring in the step too.

Stopped the oil yesterday after breakfast. Today he was a total dope to bring in from the field...

*add oil to the very long list of things that make him fizzy*
