Hi all. This is my first post on here as i am a lurker, i usually read everyone elses posts but i now need some advice so would be very grateful for some help.

I have a big heavy belgian draft. I havent had her too long (2 months). Her mane is nice but a bit brittle and her tail is very brittle and has snapped off pretty short. I have been using coconut oil so hopefully see some benefit from this soon. Her hooves were quite bad but couple of trims from farrier and plenty of Kevin bacon and they are looking lovely. I am on a mission to get her looking glossy and get her mane and tail nice and soft and long. So i was thinking of putting oil in her feed but im worried as she is pretty hefty. Not overweight as her breed is very heavy but i dont want to put extra weight on. I can cut back on her short feed if i add some oil so that should be fine but i dont know how much oil i should use to just help her coat and not for putting on weight. I also dont know what the best oil to use is, read alot of good stuff on corn oil. She weighs approx 800kg. Also how long do you think it will take her tail to grow long? I was hoping it would look reasonable next summer as i would like to do some showing with her.

Thanks in advance!

I'd use a table spoon of corn oil in her feed daily. It will give her a lovely gloss.

As for her tail, the important thing is not to brush it - ever. Keep it clean and tangle free with a good conditioner and something like show sheen.

Ditto Amymay. I never brush tails except at a competition once unplaited, (1 big plait for traveling) with them having been washed & conditioned the day before.

Same here. I only ever wash my horse's tail before a competition/hunting. Wash it with baby shampoo as many times as needed to get it clean (best washed with warm water) then I condition it too. I quite like Avon's leave-in conditioner as it's quite oily so seems to work well on horse hair. Rinse it out then plait tail into a big plait and brush out once dry (I also travel with a big plait in)

I like linseed for giving a shiny coat and it's good for hooves too. I feed whole micronised linseed from Charnwood Milling, just half a cup for a shiny coat. Adding biotin will also be good for feet, though you could give a complete supplement like Farrier's Formula instead.

Supreme Products Mane and Tail rebuilder has worked wonders on my pony's damaged hair. A little massaged in to the roots is all you need. I bought a bottle this time last year and still have about a third of it left so its not costly and worth a try alongside the oil

For coat condition (15.2 TB) i've recently started using about 100g micronized linseed per day, one bag lasts ages, and will increase it for weight gain. As for her tail, I run a normal hair conditioner through to keep It tangle free.

For my gelding I used Curragh Carron Oil, a bit pricey but brilliant.

Also Biotin for good feet

I have a big 16hh Westphalian Kaltblut (Draft) mare. She was enormous when I bought her, so has been on a diet ever since. She gets no hard feed whatsoever but I do give her wheatgerm and 60ml linseed oil in a handful of chaff, daily. She has lost weight and has good hooves and shiny coat/ mane/tail. I use a tea-tree-based mane & tail conditioner.
