My mare came back from stud today, now she hasnt been confirmed in foal as I thought it best to wait for 28 day scan but even if she isnt in foal she wont be recovered this year... This is my 1st attempt at breeding so sorry if this sounds a silly question. Is it ok to start riding her again? what if anything should I feed her, she is on plenty of grazing but usually gets a handful of mix to put her garlic and other supplements in....? Is there anything else I should or should not be doing? Any other advice would be greatfully received.

thanks in advance Sally

Sally, treat her as normal, you really don't need to change much about your management of her for several months yet. There are some veterinary products, supplements and wormers that are not suitable for mares in foal, so take to reading the small print. Fingers crossed for your 28 day scan

You are fine to keep riding. I kept riding mine until she got too furry (I have to sedate her to clip her and couldn't while she was in foal) I tried to ease mine off a bit, but after being buggered off with several times out hacking I upped her work again.

As my friend says "Shes pregnant, not sick"

Was she scanned at 14-16 days?? If not, PLEASE get it done at that stage if it's not too late rather than waiting. It is FAR easier to both see and deal with twins at 14-16 day. Once twins are implanted it is far harder to pinch one without the other going too - especially if they're very close together. And in fact it is possible to miss a twin if they're lying back to back and show up as one 'blob' on the screen.

its only about 14 days since she finished her season so do you think I should get her scanned now then? oh its so stressful.

my vets should be ok I use Bushy Equine Clinic in Berkley - she has been scanned twice not in foal whilst with the stallion but not sure how reliable the vet was but the last time she definately had a egg there and stallion took a definate interest in her........so hopefully with fingers, legs, feet and toes crossed she will be in foal.

Good luck, nice to read a post from some one who is worrying as much as me! My mare should be getting back some time next week and was planning to carry on as usual (very light work as coming back from injury) seen as she has had a couple of weeks holiday at stud, nice to see people agree with my school of thought.
