...... can you ever stop a dog stealing? food I mean? As in Oh has just gotten a carrot out of the fridge, and Dex has just made off with it, ok OH's fault for having it at Dex nose height, but still.

and can you train the "chasing" of small furries, namely a JRT, out of them? Im thinking probably not....... :o

Yes, and yes;) As long as you don't include picnics in that:o:D

Re the stealing thing - take away the opportunities first off, then start teaching him to be polite and not snatch. Here is one method to do this: http://www.loveyourdog.com/gentle.html

Teaching him self control like this will help more generally with his snatching.

Re the chasing - he needs to learn alternative, acceptable reactions to small things - such as to sit when he sees one, to get a treat, so he learns to ignore them. I would start doing this every time you meet a small dog out walking in the street. I would be cautious of letting him off-lead around little dogs for now though. I imagine your training classes will also help with this:)

A carrot - well at least he goes for the healthy option:rolleyes:;):D

LOL- hes not off lead period!!!- unless it is stoopid o'clock in the morning and no one is around!!! It is OH's mum's JRT, and he is 110% with her until she runs off somewhere- then hes like "ohhhhhhhh she obviously wants me to chase her!!"
. She not the best socialised dog in the world, but I can not blame her for not wanting massive Dex lump chasing after her. Will practise making him do summat else. :)

See he does not snatch- very gently takes treats, will wait to be released from a sit with a full dinner bowl on the floor, but does put paws on the work surfaces looking for anything left- our kitchen has never been cleaner LOL. This is actually the first time he has nicked something out of one of our hands..... and its not like he is a poor starved dog- Vet on saturday said she thought he was at his ideal weight- all 25.5kg of it!!

Thankies Spudlet!

Henry was just the same when I got him, but as he has settle in with me and learned where the boundaries lie (paws on the table etc = the Voice Of Doom) he has got much better, I had a few people over the other weekend and we were all sitting on the floor or sofa eating tapas, which was on a table at nose height, and nobody got mugged:eek: Wouldn't have been able to say that a few years ago!

LOL- we eat at Dex height in front of the TV  he is not even allowed in the room- instead sits in the hall hurumpghing!!

A lot depends on the breed of dog!
Non of mine steal my food but I had a Lurcher that was the biggest tea leaf ever! Ihad to keep a child lock on the fridge or he would take everything out, what wasn't edible to him he would bury and, if after a long and tiring day with the horses and sheep, lack of sleep the night before due to a mare foaling, I can promise you that if when you finally get to bed, your feet hit a bag of cold shredded lettuce, you get out a darn sight faster than you were falling into it!

That dog could clear up 1 kg of marg, butter and two bowls of dripping plus anything else in the fridge like cheese, meat, milk - and not get a runny tummy. He had the constitution of an ox.

Hes a mongrel but thought to be Ridgeback X staff. I dont know wether it stems from his time as a stray- I think he would eat and eat and eat and eat if the chance arose!!

Lettuce in your bed- think I would have thrown said lurcher out of the window LOL

Keeping everything under a watchful eye it is then!!

We are trying to drill 'Leave it' into Betsy, she is slowly getting there. But it has to be said in my 'serious voice' or it is completely ignored.

Mams Ridgey will steal anything she can reach.

LOL- cant do long line (he has issues with em- makes him jump up and grab it etc etc) extender i can do LOL- Food is always about my person- balls outside the garden he is simply not interested in- way too much other stuff.... whistle and clicker I can do- infacvt it is a clicker with a whistle on it..... am sure I can beat it out of him- I am of course joking!!

I use a very thin, light line, that trails on the ground, I only tug it or stand on it when I need to. Also try sessions of exchanges, swapping one thing for another, right, you have a carrot, but HEY! I have a chicken wing, oooo! And you can get it if you 'leave' the carrot and sit!
