So in honor of the new round pen I thought I'd try join-up with Bree having watched a video last night. So 5 laps left, then 5 right and turned her again. Had her ear on me all the time and wanted to come in - decided not to run her round for too long so called her in and her head came down and she started the mouthing thing and then proceeded to follow me quietly in a figure of eight. All four signs and follow-up in 10 minutes.

It feels like a confidence trick except it was my own horse and she doesn't do anything she doesn't want to. And no equipment except a lunge line - not even a headcollar.

Yes - I'm not really one for gurus and that, but I do like the way he works with horses. The join up just made me laugh because she's normally such a contrary horse and there she was being an advert for a horse guru.

This is slightly off-topic, but I had the Bedouin guy Ali Almeri out to work with my horse about 3 weeks ago and he does a very similar join up excercise. He left with telling me to do this with my horse every time I ride. Which I did. I then decided to lunge him today - and he won't, as he wants to follow me around join-up style!! Solve one problem and you get another!

BTW I have no doubt that Monty Roberts methods work but he didn't invent them notwithstanding trademarking them....

It's just body language, nothing more, nothing less. Monty Roberts was by no means the first, nor the last to use it. All experienced people use body language with horses, montys marketing maybe new, the concept isn't though.

Agree totally with this the marketing is the new thing not the concept.

I totally agree that he's mostly about marketing and as I said not much for gurus. Buti have found having lots of little short videos to watch and mimic useful and he can't be that bad a teacher if a numpty like me can do it first time.

Samuelissimo - it's all about the body language. I have to stand very square on the Bree behind her girth line and stamp and slap the lunge line on my legs or shoulders to get her to move away. I spent a little while with the dually halter teaching her to stand still if I backed away making eye contact first as well. But I am soooo not an expert - I think I only started this thread because I'm so proud we got something right for once. :)

..

My friend tried to teach me to lunge so I decided to experiment with a part backed Arab gelding aged 4. I couldn't get him to not join up .lol. I'd send him away and half a circle later he was back for more hugs. :)
