I have just had a call from sister inlaw about a horse that would be suited to me, she knows me very well etc....and the horse is a 16.2hh ISH bright bay mare, 13yrs old clean bill of health but a bit nervous as she has had a pretty rough time in her past, she is 100% to do everything, can spook out hacking like my old one did but nothing exciting...so thats fine she's only ever ridden in snaffle or hackamore
She would come with her tack and some rugs....loan with view to buy in a year or sooner should I wish....now don't have a job yet which is why I wasn't looking that hard for a horse just one to share, but Hubby has said that I should at least go and see her try her etc and then if I like to bring her home......he know's how happy that it would make me, she needs some 1 to 1 apparently and boy o boy would she get all the love and fuss in the world with me I am desperate for a new horse and this one seems to have just come my way by word of mouth.
I'm trying not to get tooo excited incase it doesn't work out, but she certainly sounds like a horse I would look at for sure.

Only thing is now, I am looking for some livery in my area as I do not have a clue having not had a horse here so could anyone point me in right direction of any good yards must have turn out all year and would like somewhere to school if poss.

DIY livery until I got a job and then may look at part livery.

How much are farriers too?
Hay & straw prices.....or shavings etc etc?.......
feed prices these days?

I am in Colchester in essex and would like to know about yards in this area I don't mind traveling about 10 - 20mins away for the right yard.
Pref a smaller yard as I don't really like the bigger one's but thats not to say I won't be interested should it have what me and the horse require.

Thanks.....and please help yourself to some celebrations from the tin.......:)

Bump....

I will be checking local tack shop out in the morning too for yards just need to know their price's and facilities and what price hay n straw etc is before I get the mare.

Thanks :)

Hiya I'm in Colchester, what are you looking for facilities wise? I can pretty much tell about any yard in Colchester, and the ones to stay away from lol!
Pm me with details of the kinda yard you're looking for and I'll do my best to help x

Check out priory and kiln too. I'm currently paying 6 quid a bale for decent hay, and shavings round here are selling for between 7 and 8 quid a bale. Straw I'm not too sure about. I can put you in touch with a decent farrier if you need, I'm currently paying 65 quid a full set and 18 a trim. Anything else let me know...
Eta diy is around 30 pounds a week for somewhere with a school and turn out, part usually in the 60, 70 pounds a week ware but this varies obviously.

Sounds promising and exciting!
Hay and straw is astronomical in Essex at the moment (I'm currently at uni with my horse in Gloucestershire and the hay and straw is half the price!)
Hope you find a lovely yard, I'm searching for one too! (Bring my boy back for a month or two over Christmas :)

I would have to try and find someone that would let me buy in bulk, maybe cheaper for me to bed on shavings....I actually hate straw it smells too bad esp with a mare...euuugh!
Shavings are roughly about 6-8pound a bag still isn't it?

If it was cheaper to buy large haylage I would do that, so long as it doesn't blow mare's head off...lol

I'm in Brentwood so my yard would be too far away, but to give you an idea of prices I am on part livery (all included except, riding, grooming, wormers, vet etc.) and it is £440 a month. Good hacking and a floodlit 40x20 arena and all year turnout and only 10 horses.

I pay £64 for shoes and that includes road nails.

Sorry, can't help with the cost of feed as mine is included, but our livery has gone up because of the high price of hay / straw.

I think straw would be cheaper than shavings, it's entirely personal preference! I love the stuff. Obie always has a ridicously deep bed with massive banks as he loves to lay down! Obie however is an extremely clean boy so is a diamond to muck out so it's very simple to maintain; mares on the other hand are more tricky!

Gorgeous George: Have you got an numbers of any liveries around the Great Leighs area?
My horse is coming back from uni for Christmas and livery he was at before has no turn out at the moment :(
