so here is my lad,now i was just wondering about what to do about plaiting him,i dont want to plait him as he has such a lovely mane(dont normally like long mane's !!) but for some reason id like to let his fly,so he is a welsh D x gypsy cob so i was thinking because he is basically cob do i need to plait him ?? his mane has got longer since this pic 6 weeks ago

you could do a gypsy plait like the one in spookponys sig, or a running plait?

The running plaits are very hard to do imo, but suit arabs!

or just plait him and just have lots of them?

Running plaits are easy with the right mane! If the mane is long, but thin it's a doddle. Just keep the strand next to the neck really tight, and do it with the horse's head lowered slightly as it's easier to plait. Not too low though as it'll be baggy when the horse lifts his head again!

Personally i wouldnt plat him at all as both gypsy cobs and welsh D's are shown in natural state so you would be more correct to tidy up and leave flowing in the breeze.

i want to do all different classes,as he is only a yearling i can take him in quite a few but obviously i want to take him in the welsh part bred, but isnt he ment to be plaited for that ??

Sorry ( however your boys mane is lovely) but am I the only one that thinks plating horses manes is a complete nonsense anyway, I have no idea why I feel this way, but it just looks so unnatural and uncomforatable and I much prefer to see any horses mane natural.

Personally I wouldn't plait, but if you wanted to use the running plait it is very easy to do (think french pleat sideways) Once you have the hang of it you'll wonder why you ever found it difficult.

I always plaited my arabs for hunting etc, much as I like a flowing mane, wrapped around my fingers going fast at the top of a mountain was not the place for it.
