I had spooks shod about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and since then due to his back problem he has only been out once and has therefore has barely rounded off the nail heads, let alone started wearing his shoes.

I had originally booked him in for the 19th December, as when he is working, about 4 1/2 to 5 weeks is about as long as he will go.

I called the Farrier tonight to see when the first appointment after xmas is that he can book me for and he said 9th January.

So, bearing in mind that I will hopefully be able to get a bit of extra riding in during time off work over xmas, do I risk trying to push him out to a 7 1/2 week shoeing with the change that he wears them out before farrier comes out, or do i stick to the original appointment and have a barely worn set of shoes taken off.

(no point having re-fits - he does give his shoes quite a beasting!!)

Pickle easily goes 7.5 weeks sounds like you know what you want to do really. If the shoes arnt worn no use replacing them providing his feet dont grow alot!

The fact that the shoes are almost unworn is not really the thing to consider here. The question is, how fast have his hooves grown? Are they starting to hang over the shoes at all? If so, get them done, if not and you don't think they will by 9th January, then you can delay.

Was going to say the same. The question is more how fast his hooves grow as opposed to how fast the shoes are worn.

If his hooves grow fast, thus meaning the short distance between shoes; then his lack of work shouldnt affect this and id go with the usual shoeing date

Eeek 4-5 week shoeing!!!! I would be sooo poor. What does your horse do to need shoeing that often? Even my TB's go 6-7 weeks, and I actually wear their shoes out, my farrier says I must ride them all day every day to get my moneysworth out of them. My ID mare can go forever with out losing shoes, although she gets done every 6-7weeks as that is the farrier's rule!

You say that he has hardly rounded the nail heads so refits would be the obvious choice to me at the first date.. As said before he will still have grown hoof that will need trimming.
