Really good ride, wore me out tho, 18 miles of trotting cantering and tanking across fields ect and generally excited ginger pony, he was off on a mission from the beggining right to the end, it wasnt the distance or the time out riding, it was the pace, went round with a friend who does the endurance all the time, her pony is like a steam engine and will trot mile after mile, any terrain without breaking into a sweat, I'm rather stiff this morning
Sorry not had time to post until today as it's been a roller coaster of things to do both before and after the ride lol.
It was my daughter's 13th birthday yesterday as well and I think she was rather put out that I didn't even get to see her until after 4pm
I enjoyed the ride although I didn't see that many people. I will post some pics later as partner has them on his phone and not had the chance to upload them yet.
I started the ride from Leycett at about 9.50 am. What time did you set off Pedantic?
I rode most of it alone as I had no one else to go with.
It was ok through Hollywood but trust there to be offroaders there as well at the same time lol.
I crossed over the a525 and then on the way to a farm track I came across two nice ladies on Arab types both grey I think? and they gave me a nice lead up the track and I got a canter. I was going to go the 18 mile but I was told by a friend there were a few gates that were a bit hard to open later in the ride and unless I was with someone it may be hard as Doug is not easy to get back on again as he is huge lol. So I chickened out because he was pretty sweaty at that point and although I think he may have coped and I certainly wanted a fast ride I didn't want him to do an injury as he wasn't fully fit and most of the riders I saw were riding experienced fit horses.
Also I had real trouble pulling him up too and despite being in a bubble gag he was a lot stronger than I thought and it was my first time out with him on a ride like that.
How was the ride later on Pedantic because a fair few of the tracks were frozen in places and I know that one up by the farm was solid most of the way
I had a smashing ride though and did the 10 mile route and on the way back rode with a really nice lady who is sister to the lady who organised the ride. The horse she was riding was so well fit for its age as it wasnt young at all and even Doug was put through his paces in trot to keep up lol.
Everything was fine until we joined the Apedale park and rode down to the centre. On the straight part he was fine and then a lady on another horse went past and he wanted to go with her and I said no. Then on one of those banks and oh crap they were steep ( dont forget Im not used to these endurance rides, have done banks before on treks etc but on safe riding school types). Anyway he started to trot down one and went into canter and took off. He saw this lady on the horse in front and even though I was riding with someone he became a different horse. I managed to pull him up after frightening myself going down bank fast and then we came to the rise of another and he took off uphill this time. I had whipped him around the other way before we approached the uphill and was trying to go it steady but he had other ideas. I was trying to turn him to one side to get him to stop and then I lost my stirrup iron and as we went into canter my right stirrup had gone lol. I eventually pulled him up and jumped off as quick as I could as he wouldnt even stop for dismount. Luckily the lady I was with had picked my leather and stirrup up as the whole thing had slid off as I must have put my foot back too far at one point in trying to turn him lol.
I had to laugh though because even though I was angry at his behaviour I didnt fall off but then as I was leading him down the other side of the bank I slipped and banged my arse on some frozen grassland lol.
So in the end I led him down to the centre before putting the stirrup on and having a nice sherry and mince pie ( asked if they had any cognac for the shock) and then got my other half to drive down ( as only live up the track from the centre) so he could help me get back on. He was so wound up it took me over 20 mins to climb back on. I wish now I had gone for the 18 miles because I think he would have had the energy for it because he was bouncing and we trotted most of the way home alone.
I dont feel stiff though which is the main thing but the day started off on a bum note as he barged through the stable in the morning to try and get to Mcfly as I stupidly forgot to fasten the door as I reached over for his head collar. Of course silly me I tried to stop him. Ever tried getting in the way of a draft cross in a narrow doorway ? He dragged me through with him as I tried to stop him getting out and he wrenched my left boob around the brick doorway. It ached all the time during the ride and last night it was agony and its still as bad today. No bruising as yet but it is reddened a bit and looks swollen. I would say I felt a right tit afterwards but it was my left so I couldnt lol.
But anyway had a smashing ride and will def go again next year
Will post some pics later when other half gets home.
Hope everyone else who went on it from the forum ( and anyone else for that matter) had a safe and happy ride.
