ok say you had a lovely TB mare and decided to breed from her but say you wanted to keep this foal and poss wanted it to be a bit less TB. could you select artificial insemination from a shetland for example? a) would this be possible b) would welfare groups/vets allow this? c) do you think it would be right?

i know nothing on breeding so am prob asking a ridiculious question but wondered what peoples views were?!
 
I would use a stallion that was abit more similar to my mare than a shetland! Or else the foal may come out with tiny legs and a really long body or something. Maybe a warmblood? I've always been told to choose a stallion that compliments the mare and is already quite similar to her. Though it depends what you want the foal to be like really.
 
really? would never had thought that! see if you did have a TB shetland and the foal was born tiny, it wouldnt be able to reach its mums udders so sure some human intervention would be needed in some cases?
 
yeah if i was actually gonna breed from my mare i could choose characteristics that would suit her and strengthen poss weaknesses in the foal. but with modern day technology, cloning etc. i think there is the possibility for people to start being 'creative' and IMO i think this is wrong.
 
Theodore O'Connor has a little bit of shetland in him iirc, but back a generation or two. he is a pony anyway, after all, albeit by a tb.
i wouldn't put a shettie on a tb, for a million reasons, but if you wanted something smaller and more sensible and ponyish, i think i'd put maybe a connemara or sth stallion on. AI not always necessary... plenty of studs have a convenient ditch to put the mare in to let the stallion get on, i kid you not! or a small Irish Draught stallion would be a lovely cross. depends on the mare's good and bad points (put a pic up if you're serious about it, there's some very very experienced breeders around here who are ace on conformation), and on what you're trying to breed.
 
The way round you are doing it it should be fine. What i mean is as your mare is bigger than the stallion the foal will have more room in the uterus to grow and develop and may well be bigger than expected. If it was the other way round TB stallion to shetland mare, the size of the mares uterus would limit the foals development and could well cause problems for both the foal and the dam!

I'd personally go with something a little less extreme than a shetland, ID or cob maybe!!

A friend of a friend had a beautiful 17.1hh TB mare, very good confo etc... well one day a sec A stallion got in the field, when it was noticed it was removed, everyone said, he won't have served her he is to small, 11 months later baby appears, made a stunning 14.1hh show pony
 
I think it would look dreadful - a TB x Sheltie?!

I had a pony on loan once who was Trakhener x Welsh - yet only 13.2hh! He had this massive horse head. Very odd. Unfortunately he turned out to be a rig and had the horse strength which only added to our problems with him!
