Okay, situation is, new horse, not really had a 'regular' worming programme in the past from what I can work out.
Going into own paddock, has been grazed by others in the past, but not ATM. So not a need to follow yard's worming programme.

What would you initially worm with? Pramox or guard? I have heard horror stories about both and do not wish to have a colic case!! Bearing in mind he is only a weeny hossie, but v.hardy (shettie).

And depending on what you use, what would you then follow up with?

Yeah, I'm a complete worming phobe. Always followed a yard's programme so never had to learn all the ins and outs.

can someone explain it to me, like, REALLY simply (asif you wre explaining to a child).

Thanks!!

Ok, if the horse has a dodgy worming history he needs to be wormed for everything. The only wormers that can do this are Equest+Equitape or Pramox.
If you perform a worm count it will give you an indication of what is going on inside. Generally I think of 800 + as a danger, but if the horse is in bad condition in any way you may need to re consider that.
Basically everything over 800 epg I do like this:
*required dose of Panacur Guard for 3 days.
(this will move some of the burden prior to proper clearout - minimizing risk of upsetting him)
*required one off dose of Pramox.
(if you are very concerned than get Equest and Equitape and do them a few days apart).
Then a worm count after 2 weeks to double check everything has gone.
Worm counts may seem unnecessary considering those wormers work on everything, but the higher the burden the higher the risk of colic - which there is a simple way around.

i would personally use equimax and then equest to cover everything... we have a new pony on the yard a rescued welsh a and shes very thin with a pot belly and shes had equimax and then the owners waiting a wekk and usine equest. i used this stratagy on my gypsy cob 3 months ago as he was from gypsys and he was full of worms ( i found them!) up to 6" long and full of red worm too and he was never colicy...

Also just had a new horse thin but pot bellied. I've been told by the merchant I use to use panacur guard this time then worm for tapes the time after next when it is considered the right time of year. My other horse currently has equest and pramox, she's just had the equest and will have another equest in 13 wks then pramox 13 wks after that but now I'm wondering if I should combine something with the panacur guard that does tapes? Don't want to be feeding a load of worms and this boy desperately needs some weight on. CONFUSED!!
