... potty trained their horse?

I only ask because my old horse used to wee as soon as he went into his stable (ie after turnout), so I used to keep a bucket outside his door and 'catch' it so it kept the bed clean. After some time, we put rubber matting down and put the bed up around the walls in the day (because he would never lie down during the day). His didn't like to wee on the floor (coz it would splash his legs) so he would only wee if we put some bedding down. Therefore, we were able to 'catch' the wee most of the time.

Over several months, he just got completely used to weeing when we went in to 'catch' him. We didn't have to put the bed down even!

For the last couple of years that we had him we hardly ever missed 'catching' him. We would go in at 7am, 12 noon, 4pm and 10pm and he would 'peeform'!

It saved an absolute fortune in bedding - and he still had a lovely thick bed!

He would go anyway if we were late, but as my mum is at home all day, she would do the duty for me!

Just wondering if anyone else has ever done this!

I catch my current horses wee about twice a day (ie after mucking out and putting clean bedding in and after coming in), but he is not quite potty trained yet!

Not quite the same thing but I used to look after a Grade A showjumper who had been trained to wee when you whistled at him. We always used to get him to wee just before he had to go in the ring, he seemed to jump better!

I caught my horse's wee all last winter. Not quite at routinely as you but he'd wee when I brought him in so I could catch it in his 'wee' bucket! I only caught the one immediately when I came in.

He now poohs and pees before he comes almost every time. It's a routine now; when I go to catch him the head collar goes on and he walks for a bit, then has a pooh, then walks a bit and has a pee before he leaves the field. Sometimes he does it before i've got to him to catch him.

Not quite the same, but the first time I rode my young mare after I got her she stopped to do a dropping. I drove her on as I don't allow this. Now she'll NEVER do one while tacked up, but always either does a dropping or stales when she sees the tack appear!

You wee catchers!!!

I wish i could but my mares pee when and where they wish dont think they'd appreciate me running in with a potty!

yes, i have. i find mares easier to teach than geldings... a lot of the boys get shy when you try to get a bucket under them. i whistle when they wee when they first go into the stable, and they learn to do it to order... very easy.

At the riding school I went to (many moons ago) the horses were kept in during the day in stalls. We had what the owner called 'a tinkle patch' - a strawed area round the back where the horses were taken before they were stalled. We also used to whistle to get them to 'perform'. Any that started to 'spread their legs' inside were caught if lucky in a bucket.

My mate used to do this to her gelding - boy did I laugh! Then I got new horse that was very wet in the stable. Started catching his first wee when he came in and it made such a difference. He didn't like the noise much though and after a while he stopped weeing on command so much. I'd wait outside his stable with a bucket and nothing - sure enough whenever I turned my back, he'd let it all go! Typical

My mare and gelding are both trained to wee on the whistle when they go into a clean bed - my mare will wee when requested before loading too. I was trying to encourage a friend's horse to wee at a show before he went back in the lorry by whistling and my mare obliged instead! Just need routine and practise. I don't get up in the night to catch midnight ones though!

one of my friends horses poo's in a bucket in the corner of her stable!
so all she had to do is empty the poo bucket and take out some of the wet straw!

I dont think she was trained to do this as such, i think it was more the fact that she poo'ed in that corner so friend put a bucket there lol

one of my other friends horse wee's as soon as you open the door to the barn so if you were being really fast you could run and put a buket down if you really wanted too

My mare always pees in a bucket after she's had her breakfast / tea. In fact she will wait until I'm in position with the bucket before she "goes". Sometimes it's only a dribble but most times it's a good half bucket. She always gets a reward for being such a clever girl!

Yeh, can usually catch Murphs first wee when he comes in at night. Trouble is the mare in the adjoining stable usually goes at the same time so you have to run fast between stables! Certainly helps keep his stable dry as I think he saves up all day to go when he comes in!
