Hello all,

Would appreciate any advice or experiences with old boys (horses' not men! LOL) that you may have had, in particular relating to arthritis in the hocks and filled legs when stabled.

If so, how? What with?
Results?

I am wondering if magnatherapy would work. Old boy is stiff behind, noticeably so when turned out though feels ok when ridden. Or whether supplements are the way to go.

As the above says really, would magnetic stable chaps work? Would they also assist with any arthritis that may be lurking further up the leg? Or do you leave well alone....

Appreciate any experiences!

Thanks!

Being out 24/7 helped my boy no end, just mooching around the field - keeping mobile kept him more comfortable. And whilst I never experienced filled legs, I'm guessing it would also help with this issue to.

I thought he would hate it, but he loved it. It made me feel better to think he was in at night when it was cold or wet, but truth be known that's exactly the weather that made him stiffer if stood in.

Is increased turn out an option?

He has been out 24/7, though due to lack of grazing I have been bringing him during the day.

The yard dictates when they have to come in over night for the winter, which I am hazarding a guess will be end of Oct, sooner if the rain keeps up.

Thanks for your post Millertime.

My horse has never suffered with Filled legs but he does have Arthritis in both front feet.
He is in at night and out during the day and does some form of gentle exercise each day. I have him on a Joint Supplement and Devil's Claw and I've also just starting using Magnetic Boots. He has them on as soon as he goes in his stable and then I go back a couple of hours later to remove them. I also bandage his legs overnight, mainly to keep them warm and to provide some support.
He hasn't come out of his box stiff yet, so something is helping!

My boy has arthritis in his hocks. I've tried lots of different supplements over the years, at the moment he's on cortaflex which seems to be helping. Anything with glucosamine and msm should help.
I've recently bought equilibrium magnatherapy stable chaps and i'm very pleased with the results. I leave them on him all night after building up gradually and they have made a vast improvement. He has been on box rest after lammi which aggravated the arthritis and he wouldnt pick his feet up due to stiffness and was noticeably stiff when he came out of his stable. He now picks up all his feet and i'm back riding him again and he's coming on really well. he also has arthritis in his knee which was causing him major bother and the magnets have had a massive impact on it. I dont think it matters so much that the magnets arent directly on the area as they help increase the blood flow through the leg. I also think the fact that the chaps keep the legs warm helps.
Is your boy still in work? I've always found 'little and often' really helps. My boy has been back in work a week and light exercise really helps him loosen up and keep him sane! Hope this helps.

Thanks both.

Horse is very much still worked. Ridden 5-6 days a week, he is hacking at the minute, will start schooling again soon. Takes him quite awhile to warm up and get going and about 40mins odd before he even finds flexing easy/comfy.

I have brought him in early as feel he is ready to come in, esp as no grazing (due to dry summer) and the colder nights.

Contemplating going down the Hock Boot route. Will let you know my findings/experience if I do!
