I bought some bute tablets in the States a few years ago, they are well past their sell by date. I have been told that bute doesn't break down and won't get toxic in anyway. Anyone got anything definite on this?

personally I wouldnt use it - I use AB which were 1 month out of date (vet said it was ok) but not sure about bute and if it was years old - have you posted in vet section?

I cant recommend to anyone else, but tbh when pony went down with lami recently and vet only had 2 bute on him so couldnt leave a supply, I asked if it would be ok to give my 2 year out of date stash (which had been supplied by previous vet for other horses various probs). He seemed to think it was OK and it certainly worked like bute, to the extent that when trying to take pony off it, she became lame again and had to have it a few more days before I could remove altogether, she was then sound enough to do without it.

I would get new bute unless it wasnt readily available from vet for some reason, but as a standby/middle of night/emergency thing, I didnt find in my particular case that it did her harm and it still acted like bute should in effects.

Edited to add that the bute was stored in cool dry conditions in the original foil sachets and box

I have used bute 2 years out of date without a problem. So long as it is sealed, dry and cool it should be ok. Not sure about tablets though.
