Following on from my Chihuahua thread, we have come to the conclusion that they just won't cope with our lifestyle unfortunately.

So I was wondering if anyone knew of any breeders of King Charles Cavalier Spaniels that are more old-fashioned in type, ie more of a working type.

I had looked into this before and drew a blank, but I thought it was worth asking on here, you never know!

Many thanks.

the cavalier king charles spaniel has never been a working dog

all of the ckcs I know and meet (there are lots in a vets!) would never make happy yard dogs, in your last post did you say you wanted a dog to come out with you when you ride? if so that alone would rule them out for me, they have a high incident of mitral valve disease.
with the health issues they have as a breed i would not consider one at all especially as large sectors of the showing/breeding fraternaty will not entertain the idea that syringomyelia is a problem in the breed.allthat said if you get a brave one the have fantastic natures.

as you are not sure what you are looking for why dont you look at rescues to find the perfect dog?

contact CAYLA on here i believe she is involved in rescue

There has never been a working type in CKCS as they are bred as a toy breed i.e. as a companion.

(I have know some go beating and they are quite good at obedience)

If you are worried about health you need one from fully tested ancestry -too many of this bred are mass produced.

Again there is no such thing as a working CKCS however many compete in agility. It maybe worth looking into the breeding of some of them. The one that springs to mind is polinka but I don't know anymore than that she breeds for agility not show

They may not be bred to work but IMO they are mini spaniels and many have more energy than a normal working spaniel when given the chance to actually work, our cavalier is the only dog in the pack who can run along side the bike with OH and keep up the pace for aslong as he is out, on walks she spends the whole time hunting, she runs the whole time she is out she never loses pace. The reason I kept her was I doubted she would be allowed t hunt and get the exercise she does here in another home (considering they where all looking for a couch potato. We do rehome cavaliers and they have all been a ball of energy I have to say. My nana used to bred and she them when I was younger and she never lost one under the age of 13 and she passed away herself a few years back and my granddad is living with mam with their 14 year old cavi. Im not sure of working "types" but can tell you I would work any cavalier and I would definitely hack out with mine (she would be more than fit for purpose) we actually have a young male cavi in for rehome now.

Thank you the replies.

I had one when I was growing up and he would "flush" birds from the hedge, and I have known a few like this ie willing to use their nose. This dog would be for my daughter and whilst she comes shooting most weekends I do not think she is up to having a proper working dog as yet, but her dog would need to have enough energy to be out all day with us iykwim.

I don't want it for hacking out with, in a nutshell a family dog that would be obedient enough to go on the beating line with my daughter!
