Old gal getting colic??

My old mare aged 27 is a warm blood her teeth are pretty worn away. she is on a soaked feed of calm and condition and alfa a oil twice a day to keep her weight..Plenty of haylage which she seems to manage. She has never had colic in 13years she loves to go out and weaves like crazy if she doesnt

About three weeks ago she got colic the vet came out and pulled loads of soaked grass out of her..it passed and she went back to normal i really cut the grass down especially with the frosty mornings and over the weekend she has gone colicy on me twice it has passed after she has had a couple of really sloppy poos she doesnt thrash around just goes all sleepy and lies down which is totally out of chracter for her and it is always in the afternoon. I have put her on brewers yeast to try and help settle her gut and hardly let the grass out at all because her and her friend go balistic if there is not any grass..Anyone suffering with unusall bouts of colic? im worried about her as shes never been like this before and wonder if its something under lying??

I am sorry to hear about your mare, but she is lucky to have you care so much.

You are doing everything right, but I would speak to your vet for advice.

It may just be that her teeth are sore and she cannot chew properly, or it could be something else.

I hope she is ok. x

Colic is something I would seek advice from the vet for, esp in view of her age. I am stumped as you are obviously doing all you can for her and have checked every possible cause.

I would be tempted to blame the haylage if her teeth are bad as she may not be chewing it well enough so that it is bunging her up. I have this with my older donkey so he gets no long fibre in his diet at all. His feeds are based on sugar beet, soaked fibre cubes and soaked chop. For extra condition you could use conditioning cubes and whereas the donkey is on a straw chop alfala chop is better for less porky ponies.
My boy can eat short grass but not long grass so his grazing has to be monitored as well.
 
Thats my next move i think, just wanted someone else to think the same i think its all too much for her..hate the fact shes getting old you always think they will go forever..thanks x
 
This maybe off the mark, (and please do not take any offence etc) but is she up to date with her worming? And what product are you using? If I remember my training correctly its Red worms that can cause colic and only a very small number of wormers can treat for Red worms.
 
no offence taken at all i appreciate any advice yeah shes up to date last done with a 5 day guard beginning of november if my memory serves me would have to check if that covers red worm..thanks
 
I went through this with my mare. I would cut out the haylage even if she seems to be managing it, and replace with short chop hay replacer/HI FI cubes. Unfortunately you can get to a stage where they cant manage anything other than a soaked bucket feed

My mare in the end couldnt even manage HiFi, although I did used to leave a haynet in her stable, she would pick at it occasionally and it seemed to make her happy. But I left her enough soaked feed all the time so she never had to eat it in any quantity or because she was hungry. She ate a slice of hay a week, and it was very soft hay. Part of this was for other people who were prone to looking over her stable door and panicking because she didnt have a haynet
