Hi
my mare is 29 and hasnt travelled for about 10 years! she always did travel well but is it suitable for old horses to travel long distance or do you not recommend it?? its just im looking to re home her as a companion and someone about 3 hours away is offering a loving home but i am so unsure about the ditance... thankyou

As long as she is healthy and you give her plenty of hay and water she should be ok I would have thought. Can you do a quick pit stop any where and let her stretch her legs and get a few blades of grass?

It really depends on her condition now, we moved about 4 years ago and moved our then 41 year old and her 21 year old son. She is still up for travelling and if anything her legs don't match her mind, I now would think very carefully about travelling over about an hour or two, although she travels exeptionally well and her cushions and arthritis would mean she would be stiff for a couple of days.

We planned stops and when travelling, checking her as we went along although we had a trailer then rather than lorry and was prepared to get her out for an amble, we decided to keep going and she got out as fresh as a daisy as did her son!! We even went thru the darford tunnel and got stuck so it was nearer 5 hours than 3.

You know your horse, if she's fit and healthy and travels well then there is no reason................
