my old pony is 31 and seems very itchy at the moment, she has a very thick coat but its in good condition, she's not over rugged. she's always liked a good scratch but she's itching against things all the time at the moment. cant really give her a bath so is there anything else i can do? oil maybe? why is she so itchy?

Sorry no solutions - just to say my haflinger who had sweetitch is also very itchy and being a strong chap is breaking things with his itching - I have taken his rugs off as I thought he might be a bit too warm but it has not improved anything!!

Really interested in any responses!

I used to look after an old pony and he was scratching himself raw and we had no idea why, we looked for lice ect couldnt find anything but it turned out it was lice they were just very hard to find due to his thick coat!

I would try putting some louse powder on her, we has a problem this tie 2yrs ago this lice as it has still be fairly mild. Is she very dandraffy? you could also try aloe vera on the really itchy places, sometimes that helps. Other than thats its a difficult one as it too cold to bath unless we randomly get a mild day, which would be nice :). Hope your mare feels better soon!
