Hi all i have a very elderly horse, she is 28 now, have had her 23 years, she is quite arthritic and when damp/cold i have to give her bute. I was wondering which natural pain relief supplement was best for her as she is starting to get very stiff even at this time of year.....although she can still trot off when i approach with the fly spray! She is already on a joint supplement

P.S she is a fussy fussy lady and won't eat strong smelling things and i have to syringe bute with honey as she refuses all food with it in

Could try Devil's Claw or possibly boswellia might be better as it is supposed to be easier on the stomach for long term use. My old girl never minded it in her feed. I used to soak DC root in hot water, let it cool and add the whole lot to her bucket with her feed.
 
Boswellia is much more effective than devils claw (IMHO), global herbs alphabute is based on it. Or you can get it mail order from natural horse supplies (I think thats the right people!)
 
I have found that permanax by maxivita to be good for my old girl, but it is very strong smelling. They say you should see results in 7 to 10 days with this, If she will eat it.
 
there is bute x subi bute devils claw there is a few you can chose from is she on a joint supp that my help her as well?x
 
I've had good results with NAF Devil's Relief with my old girl (27, arthritic). She had the loading dose for 3 days, and was showing an improvement by day 2. I then reduced it back to a normal dose and she's been fine on it. I did try to reduce it a bit more, but she started getting a bit stiff again, so I've kept her on the recommended amount.
 
Will she eat danilon - nicer tasting than bute. Personally I would try this rather than natural stuff as at her age pain relief is more important that worrying about side effects.

With my elderly ones, I have put them all onto bute or danilon when they got to the stage you describe - sorry to sound horrible, but really at this good age, pain relief is more important than extending the life.

I have used natural products, but eventually they get to the age/condition that you have to resort to the stronger stuff. Try sticking in in the freezer as this reduces the smell and taste.
 
Vet is coming out on wednesday for my other horse so have asked him to bring some Danilon with him, he says he has never met a horse that wont eat it so will be intresting to see if Miss Kizzy will be the first lol

I used the herbal Bute-X on my horse & found that it worked as well as normal Bute. If you ask the co that makes it, perhaps they'd send you a sample so you could see if she'll eat it in her feed? It's by Global Herbs.
 
Agree with the above about Danilon. My old girl has been on it for 3 years (vet's advice), but she would not go near anything with bute in it - Danilon - no problem at all. It is also kinder to their system.
 
Have u tried giving bute in a marmite sandwich!! My mums horse killed for his daily sarnie!!!! he loved it!! but we found he would onli eat it with one sachet of bute in a sandwich which means u would have to try her and see wht happens!! if she is on more than one sachet u may end up having to give her more than one sarnie as its too much powder in one sarnie if u no wht i mean!! lol good luck

40 wow what an age, the vet is coming out on Wednesday with the danilon. He assures me she will eat it. How much is it? Can get 60 sachets online including postage for about £34 need a prescription from my vet though which might cost up to £15. Would this still be a better deal, have no idea of the cost at all from a vet?
