Hi there, My old mare was diagnosed with spondlititous 3 years ago! One vet told me to pts another vet said no work with her and she could be ok.. at the time she was in no pain so although it was going to be hard at times i decided to try and work with her! she had a year off then came back in doing light work hacking etc etc she gets really depressed if she doesnt do anything so she hacked lightly for a few years and now retired so ive now taken to walking her out whilst leading as shes so simple and easy! Now my other mare needs a lot more work and my older mare is now getting anxious when i take my younger mare out, she never use to be like this, if i put her in a stable she spins and spins and thats not good with her condition and if i leave her out she gallops about!! im doing it so its 10 -15 mins max so she knows that she can go and she will always come back. Either way it sends her lame when taking her friend away.. she does have horses in the field next to her... any ideas on what i can try ?? xxx

Sorry not much advice for the lonesome pony, could always try getting a smaller companion to keep her company.. all mine seem ok if I take one of the herd away, if not they seem to settle quite quickly.. u could leave her tied up in the stable, but if she yanks back you could worsen the condition or tries to jump out making it dangerous.

The condition your mare has is it like Spondylothesis humans get.. slipping of a vertebrae on the one below, or is it more like spondylosis which is more related to arthritis is the spinal cord?

Xx

Hi ya it's where there is growth on her spinal vertebrae my vet says kissing spine upside down so on the bottom vertabre it's all a bit complicated it drives me crazy because different vets will say different things:( apparently common in dogs but rare in horses x
