My Old Broodmare is 21 - she is not in foal and living out in the field with a 3yo pony....

About 3 months ago she went really funny and did not want to walk in all 4 legs - its like she didnt want to move and more like didnt want to bend her legs.... vet came to see her and said it wasnt laminitis (which is what i thought) and that maybe she had a womb infection.

After a course of bute she was back to her nomal self.

Now she has gone the same not wanting to move! Have put her back on bute again...

Really worried - has anyone ever had this before?

Does anyone's old horses constently live on bute? Or recommend a supplement to help?

Any ideas what it sould be?

The only similar experience I have had is with my old small companion pony. He was turned out with my young WB who kept moving him about and he seemed to be 'tied up' by the evening. I thought it was possibly shock laminitis and we treated him with a week box rest and bute. He then improved. I haven't risked them out together since. Does the 3 year old push your mare about at all?

You could try giving her 'Devil's Claw' or 'No Bute' in her feed daily - that is a herbal anti-inflammatory and pain relief. That will treat the symptoms - maybe she is stiff in wetter/cold weather possibly indicating arthritic changes?

Could she have been hooning with the youngster and just overdone it? One evening I came up to my then 24 year old and she was hobbling on all four legs. Turned out she had been running around on the hard ground and really upset her arthritis. Luckily she was much better by the next day but has done it again a few times since!
