Hi,
I have a 30 year old shetland pony who is losing weight. He has very few teeth left and they have been checked recently. He has been checked for worms and had a cushings test both which came back fine. His blood results suggested he may have problems in his gut which there may be little we can do about however as a last ditch attempt to see if it makes a difference to his weight I wanted to try adjusting his feed to see if it helps him gain weight at all. I wondered if anyone has any advice for feed to help him gain weight? He is currently out 24/7 with access to good grazing. He gets 2 feeds a day and in each feed has the following: 1 stubbs scoop fast fibre, 1/2 scoop calm and condition, big glug of soya oil, Naff in the pink senior supplement with some grated carrots! Any advice anyone might have would be much appreciated as I've had the little guy since he was 6 so want to do what I can to help him :-)

My old dentally challenged mare gets as much soaked Equibeet and grass pellets as she can eat, with supplements etc (she is cushingoid and also has turmeric/pepper/oil for stiffness). You could also try a probiotic such a yeasacc to boost his gut bacteria?
I have a 16 yr old TB who doesn't seem to be able to absorb his food and am awaiting the result of blood tests to see if we can work out why, we are checking liver/kidney function as well as white/red blood cells.

My 31 year old Shetland came to me very poor . He quickly gained and maintains weight on soaked grass nuts and high fibre cubes with micronised linseed .
