We have just taken back an old loan pony of ours (24yo) who has developed a habit of threatening to bite. I have always been a 2ish horse home and have always been lucky to have really well mannered horses. When I approach this pony in the field or stable she puts her ears back and goes to bite/bare her teeth. She hasn't got me yet, but am actually feeling a bit intimidated by her at times (which seems crazy as my other two are giants compared to her 13.2hh).

Am at a bit of a loss. Have tried being extremely nice to her/spending time with her, giving her a stroke, groom etc. Have given her a brrrrrrr/grrrrr noise when she does it and also a slap on the neck (though good thick coat of hair probably numbs the effect of that).

Suggestions welcome. Or do I just accept she's like that at 24 and give her a wide berth!??

Carry a metal curry comb between you and her. Dont attempt to hit her with it but make it the sharp metal part she connects on the mouth/muzzle with if she lunges at you.

Ive looked after a few who would actively try and get you with one end or the other, sometimes both and found over the years that its best to get on with what you are supposed to be doing and make any attack more uncomfortable for the horse than it is for you but without you fighting back.

Do make sure she isn't trying to tell you something hurts or is uncomfortable. Some ponies do actively try to attack people - My first lad was a bit like that, you could tell which end was gong to get you by the way he was facing in his stable in the morning! But in the end they are prey animals and that is not thier normal first response.

Yes the consequences of actually connection should be immeidtae and unpleasant. But do try to find out what it is she is telling you.
